Gas leak/Smell?

Ok so I have been recently having some issues with my car sitting at idle and really starting to smell like gas. I haven't noticed this smell before and it is definietely coming from the passenger side near the rear tires so I'm assuming there is either a small leak or something wrong with the fuel pump/tank? Performance has not suffered and neither has gas miliage, but the smell can get pretty harsh if I'm sitting at a light for a bit. I'm guessing I just have to take it to ford and get raped on charges for repairs? Just looking to see if anyone has had this problem? I don't think the fuel filter has been changed in a really long time/ever, but I thought that the fuel filter was in the engine bay and not the rear of the car by the pump/tank? Any ideas/advice of what I should do? Thanks.

Re: Gas leak/Smell?

The fuel filter is near the rear of the car. You should change that before you do anything. I had a similar problem and gas would leek out from under the car in small amounts.

Re: Gas leak/Smell?

Check the gasket that goes around the filler neck where it connects to the gas tank.

+1....specially if it is more noticeable when you have > 1/2 tank of gas.

It's gonna be the filler neck, I made a how-to post on a thread a bit ago, I'll see if I can find it.

Re: Gas leak/Smell?

Went to Ford this morning and got the part for $25 plus tax and while i was there picked up a new fuel filter also. I looked at the area and it was not wet looking like in the pictures, however I would assume it evaporates/burns quickly. I'll be doing the install later this afternoon so hopefully I won't have the smell of gas/leak in my face anymore...haha

Re: Gas leak/Smell?

also you need a fuel line disconnect tool to change the fuel filter. you can pick them up at most auto parts stores. the plastic ones work just fine and are a lot cheaper

Re: Gas leak/Smell?

When you change the filter blow it out and see how dirty it is in side that will give you an idea as to how long it has been since it was changed

Good Luck !! Hope your not getting the garage floor Dirty have a little bucket for the fuel. When you change the fuel filter there is going to be some residual fuel in the lines and filter. You don't want to get fuel in your eyes open Be sure to disconnect the fuel pump first, than crank the engine to remove fuel and pressure from the lines.

Re: Gas leak/Smell?

Well thats good for him....a lot easier job to do. I wanted to know how the job went and if there were any tricks because I have a leaky gasket at the filler neck. I already posted about it and got great feedback from everyone, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Plus mine isn't bad, it just leaks a little bit right when I fill up and then stops after about an hour but it doesn't drip much.

Re: Gas leak/Smell?

Well the job went down easy, however yea didn't know that I needed the lil fuel line disconnect tool so I had ford install it...sucked but yea the fuel filter was god awful dirty black fuel came out when the tech blew into it)...and it also had a tiny hole in it, thus the fuel smell. My fuel filler neck was fine for now. But it didn't look like that bad of an install. The retaining clips came off extremely easy on the fuel filter, but yea def needed that lil $4 part from advanced auto. all well now i know. Thanks for your imput everyone.
