Can sumone give advise please

I have a 1999 v6 and I was hoping to upgrade it. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to get a v8 or just a bigger v6. I am working with part time salary so money is an issue. I have read many post but none, that are current, give prices.
Thanks any advise would help.

Re: Can sumone give advise please

As far as prices, do you mean car prices? If so, up here in wisconsin, a 02 GT can be had for 8000, with about 60000 miles. As far as a bigger v6, i would just buy a older v8 and skip the 4.0. Its a great engine, but same story as the 3.8, money spent on performance doesn't really payoff as it would on a v8.

As far as engines, you can find tons of v8s at junkyards and shops. Prestige Mustang in georgia has a ton of 4.6L 2v's and 4v's. You can buy the entire package too, engine, drivetrain, and tranny. I'm guessing they range from 1000 to 5000+ depending on what you get, mileage/condition, etc.

Re: Can sumone give advise please

Thanks I think Im going to go with the dropping a v8 in it cause i dont have the money for a gt and is it really hard to swap an engine? My school has a crane, that i could use, could i do it with some difficulties? Should i look at local junkyards for a wreck gt or search online.
Thanks for your help

An engine swap is not something you just want to tackle without preparation. If you do not have an entire donor car it will be a very painful and expensive process

Re: Can sumone give advise please

I think that the project could be a learning experience for me but i not just going to jump in lol. So the best bet would be to get an entire car? and would an older body like 94-98 work as the donor car.

Re: Can sumone give advise please

it all depends on what you want your end results to be (according to what you can spend) some bit off more than they can chew and end up with half a project done and out of money.

The v6 can make good power, it seems most really have no idea what the 3.8 can do when modded, I have owned two and modded both.

It seems without much invested its going to be hard to make the car run faster than high 14s if manual mid 15s if auto~ thats about it. You can always build the motor or add a power adder but it gets expensive, the end result can be good of course.

If you sell your car and buy a v8 you can get better performance out of the gate but the 4.6 SOHC isnt the best platform, a 5.0L pushrod engine is cheaper to mod, I personally wouldnt ruin my v6 by changing out the engine etc unless you dont care about resale etc etc.

Re: Can sumone give advise please

I would like to sell my v6 and get a gt but i dont think i could get that money. Some of the 4.6 i was looking here in Wichita KS were going for like 1400 ish which i could afford but engine swapping is crazy it kills the resale like crazy huh?

yea and by the time your done it will 90% of the time be cheaper to just buy a gt to start with than swap everything over.

Re: Can sumone give advise please

let me givr you some advise from someone who was only working part time jobs and gas went crazy...stick to your v6. for me (until i got my full time job), i had low maintenance costs and with the v6, the gas costs wasn't too bad too. put your money into a savings account and have it ready if you ever have an emergency. I'm telling you from personal experience, don't go bigger and better until you can really afford it.

I plan on staying with my 6 banger only cuz we get undermined so much in race world and have big plans for her future with boring it out to a 4.2 and adding twin turbos.....
We don't make huge gains from the start but we can finish out preety strong in the end if your willing to commit to her.....

their is always something fun about being the only one of your kind at the track, and oh what fun it is to beat a guy in a race and for him to find out he was beat by a V6

Re: Can sumone give advise please

I like my v6 but it seems mods only do small amounts of hp, excluding a turbo or supercharger . Plus i wish it didnt sound so whinny lol. I wish it had a lil rumble to it. And one more thing when i first start my car on a cold morning it squeals, it sounds maybe like a belt or sumthing does ne1 know what could stop that?
Thanks

Or you might just need a new belt or tensioner

gears, exhaust, tune...

You will get more power from the exhaust and tune.
But the gears you will notice more. You wont get any power from the gears.

Re: Can sumone give advise please

Its a spray you spray on the belt. To stop the belt from making noise. You can pick it up at any auto parts store. Just go to the counter and ask for a can of belt dressing. They will point you in the right direction.
