notched cross pin

I've been hearing that after a gear install, there is some grinding and whining when on the road.

Is it worth it to buy an aftermarket notched cross pin when installing taller gears? I'm talking 4.10s since I'm an auto. Its supposed to make the installation and transition easier.

Re: notched cross pin

They only grind and whine if they are installed wrong. You need to find a shop or person who knows about gears to do the install.

Re: notched cross pin

The whining means that the backlash isn't set correctly. It should be between 8-10 thousandths. The gears should be quiet or quieter than stock.

Re: notched cross pin

I got a set of gears from Midwest mustang installed in an 8.8" rear end and I didn't realize in time that they never set the lash at all, which I had paid them to do. About 6 mo. after I got the axle into the car a buddy heard it and told me he thought it was bad gear lash or pinion depth. I felt pretty stupid but I took it to a local tranny shop and he fixed it Turns out they never set the pinion depth in the first place. I have the uncompressed crush sleeve in my glove box. Cost me another $300 and they still whine a little because after the 1500 miles I put on the car it set up an abnormal wear pattern. Get that fixed ASAP.

Re: notched cross pin

all the stock parts will work fine up to 5:56 gears. anytime you hear a noise it's from the ring-n-pinion. via. wrong backlash, pinion depth, or pinion preload.

If you do that, you should come over here and do it on the 8.8 I have in the back yard and get pics of the write up at the same time. I don't have gears for it, but we could tear it down and put it back together.

Re: notched cross pin

You know, I'd love to know how to do that, but I don't think I'd try to learn on my car. lol Wish I could though, I could use my friends lift and save on labor!
