2008 3rd gear grind when cold

hi, my wife has a 2008 mustang 5spd and after it sits overnight and the temp is under 40 when she takes off first thing , third gear grinds when shifting. almost like the clutch is not pressed in. after it warms up, its OK. anyone else have this problem, thanks for anyone's suggestions.
the car is scheduled to go to the shop at the end of the month but i hate the thought of the trans coming apart. i thought about changing the fluid but i think it is already synthetic.

Re: 2008 3rd gear grind when cold

one of two things probably (well it can be others but most likely one of these) the clutch does not have enough adjustment so it doesnt go in far enough, when warm its not as big of a deal. I am not sure this is it since the new mustangs have hydrolic clutches~ but its worth a check.

The syncro for 3rd is having some issues and cold weather makes it worse.

I know on my 03 cobra when its cold the transmission is notchy and if I tried to shove the shifter in gear fast it would probably grind on me~ when its cold always shift smoother and slower, ease it up to the shift gate and let it go in on its own.

You can change the transmission fluid and look for metal shavings if you want, at the end of the day its an 08 so it has a warranty, if you can make this happen every day then let ford check it out, generally they are worthless when it comes to diagnosing such issues but you never know.

Re: 2008 3rd gear grind when cold

I have this same problem but with second gear. I do what spector said and just shift easy and slower when its cold and have no issues. I would check the fluid just incase but you should be fine, especially in an 08.

its not internal in the trans ... ford issued a TSB for noise coming from the block plate between the engine and trans

Re: 2008 3rd gear grind when cold

Wow, I think all Tremic trannys do this and they are actually trying to fix it now!? It sucks that you only get 6.6 hrs to R&R and rebuild half the tranny. Good old warranty work

Re: 2008 3rd gear grind when cold

Do the V6s use Tr3650s like the GTs now? or still the T45s?

The tremecs in 2004+ are supposedly a lot better, I know my 02 had 1-2 and 2-3 cold temp grinding issues, but I fixed that as per the TSB
