"Breaking it in"

I just got a glasspack put on. The tubing under my car is stock (y-pipe). I started the car and was suprised how quiet it sounded. I drove off and it sounds bad *** at higher rpms. But at an idle, you cant hear *****. I turned around and went back to the muffler place. I asked the guy if he gave me a used glass pack, and he saud it was brand new. He said i had to let it warm up for a while.
Ive been driving for the past hour around town, and it still sounds the same (Quiet). From what i read on the boards, glass packs are supposed to be loud, especially at idle. I just want to know if they gave me a used glasspack, or do i have to 'break it in'.

Took my friends about a month to break it. But that wasn't on a V6 Mustang either.

Wow, a month. Are glass packs supposed to be loud at idle, or just at higher rpms? I heard that they're supposed to be loud all the time, kind of like open headers. But what can i say, i've only had them for 9 hours.

It may sound weird..but take a water hose and spray it in the exhaust pipe. It will open up things alittle.

Just let em break it. It won't mater, after ahwile the fiberglass will break down and you'll get a whole in them.

Awww, im so happy you care Dom. If in time they're broken in and i like the sound, i dont mind spending 20 bucks year to get new Glasspacks. But if they're not the sound im looking for and still too quiet, i'll put my stock muffler on and just have cutt-off put on.

I just thing you can get better mufflers instead of paying to replace them. I mean Flowtech Warlocks have where you can uncap the muffler and run straight cats if you want.

I told you the water hose thing was gonna sound strange. But it works. It won't rust anything..your suppose to spray it in and then crack the car up and let it idle for a sec..then press the gas in...it works..me and my dad have done it to every car we've owned.

Thanks roush, i'll try that 1st thing in the morning. But what exaclty gets loosened up when i spray it with the hose? And if i dont spray it with the hose, are the things that are supposed to be loosened up supposed to "break in"? Meaning, is the exhaust flow supposed to loosen things up naturally?

Actually yes..it probably will break in. Spraying the water hose in the exhaust is just a quicker way to break it in. And IF they gave you a used glasspack..it should clean it out. But like Brent said..with just one glasspack..it's not gonna be near as loud as the cars that you hear that have 2.

Yeah. I wanted to see how one glasspack sounded on my car. And if i like the sound (Which i do), then i'd get a dual set up with 2 glasspacks. Maybe next paycheck. Thanks for the info.

So did it work? Is it the sound you want it to be?

I didnt get a chance to do it yet. I live at an apartment complex with my girl and we dont have a water hose  + it was raining pretty hard here today. My parents have a house a couple miles away from here. So sometime tomorrow i think i'll try that. I'll let you know asap

: So far the glasspack sounds GOOD! It doest sound 'ricey at all'. It sounds 'beefy', if that makes sense. fyi

Yeah..the glasspacks sound good. My dad has them on his 78 Chevy and use to have them on his 2 '69 Z28 Camaros b4 he sold them. Glasspacks give it a more hotrod sound. Well..good luck man

Once they break in it will have a louder idle. My friend has one on his straight 6 wrangler, we took the cat off and broke it in good. Sounds great, can hear him from a ways away. As far as spraying water in it...it breaks the glass that makes it a glasspack and will shoot it out lol. It makes it louder...but kinda pointless IMO

I sprayed the pipe earlier this morning before i ran my errands. It lost some 'bass', but its a lot throatier now. I love the sound. Some ricer in a mustang(v6) tried to race my at a stop light in a 2-lane turning lane. He spun his tires and i just took off normally (Even then i was ahead of him.)Anyways, im loving the sound. So i think i'll get duels in a while. Thanks again roush.

Actually what it does is gets the woven glass amt inside the tube wet when you start the car the wet soggy mat creates resistance and is jammed to the rear of the tube creating a large void area on the tube that no longer has sound deadening material and makes it louder. NO glass will shoot out the tailpipe.

Hm...I must have messed with some old glasspacks then...this one actually had small amounts of glass shooting out...or else I just dunno what I'm talking about, which is highly possible.
