first a little history on this project. my brother bought a 92 gt convertible, that needs some tlc. but his main concern for the moment is its sluggish performance. its a stock 5.0 with some off brand cold air intake. im pretty sure this is due to the gears in the rearend, is this common with these cars or has someone changed them for better mpg? he wants to have good take off but doesnt want to peak out in 1/4 mile. what gears do you guys run or suggest?

Re: gears?

they do have crappy gears stock. The 5.0 is a low peak motor in stock form and doesnt make very much hp, but has a good bit of tq. You will top out earlier but your 1/4th mile time will be faster with 3.73's vs the stock grears which are probably 2.73s~ if its an automatic there is another major source of sluggishness.

You can wake up the 5.0 for very cheap with heads/cam/intakes exhaust, cai, gears, suspension upgrades to hook up (important).

If its an auto I would suggest swapping a t-5 or selling it for a car that has one as the auto is great for consistency byt the AOD sucks in stock form.

Re: gears?

the car is aod that needs to be rebuilt. any upgrades worth while for this trans? i would get rid of it but hes lazy and doesnt like to shift.

what size rearend do these have? sorry for the stupidity im used to working on older stuff. are 3.73 going to the best option? i dont know if it matters but the car is 4 lug.

i think hes going to wait on any motor work at this point, he wants to just drive it right now. after the new wears off and he will probably do that stuff to it.
