Cam and Springs/Lifters question

Ok, so this motor I am building is going to need pretty much new everything. I could reuse the cam, but what fun is that.

So, I'd like to put a cam in there to give it that lovely 5.0 lope. Granted, my dream cam is the X or Z cam, but I really don't think I need that and I KNOW those require new head hardware.

If I were to go with a cam, what size would I be able to get away with before having to rebuild the heads? Can I go with a B, E, or F 303 cam?

In case it matters, there are 2 potential heads to be used. The stockers, and a set of GT40P heads. Not sure if there is a difference in hardware or not.

Re: Cam and Springs/Lifters question

If your going to replace heads. Go with edlebrock or trickflow. The cam you pick determine what other valve train parts you will need. You can use stock rockers and lifters with most cams. If it's a high lift cam you will need different push rods and lifters. Roller rockers and roller lifters are more money, but can get another 20 to 30hp from them.

No matter what what cam you use if it has high lift than stock you will need to change your valve springs. To ones with higher seat pressure to prevent valve float at high RPMs

Re: Cam and Springs/Lifters question

An E cam should be fine with the gt40 heads. If possible try to up grade your heads to get the max out of the cam you choose.

Re: Cam and Springs/Lifters question

What heads are currently on it? They're probably E-cast heads which suck no matter what way you run them. I ported the E7's I just put on the bronco just because they sat in the garage too long, probably pick up 2hp with 3 hours of work. If you're wanting to see gains from the cam go with aftermarket heads. If you're just wanting some lope out of this setup without caring about power then go with something around an E-cam and port the heads you have, you won't see much gains but won't lose it.

Re: Cam and Springs/Lifters question

The stockers are on it I believe...I should check the casting and make sure though. It did have the HO headers on it, so maybe tehy are already GT40 heads. THe headers are a joke to say the least.

However, I have my eye on that set I PM'ed you about....they are GT40P's that have been freshly rebuilt.

Is this the final engine combo you are wanting in this car? If not...just go budget and get it going man. I'm like you..gotta overcomplicate things too much.

Re: Cam and Springs/Lifters question

If you're running stock E7 heads, they're gonna run outta steam before something like an X-cam would be making good power.

There is no magic bullet. It's all in how all of the parts come together to work.

Re: Cam and Springs/Lifters question

dont u need to change headers if u put the gt40p heads becuse of the sparkplugs position. i would go with a f303 cam becuse it gives u that sound u want an it gives u alot of top end what the 5.0 needs an that cam can be use in the feature for boosting an if u would go with the x or z u kno u gota fly cut ur pistons for valve clearence.i have that cam my self in my 88 fox belive me its a good cam an with a good chopy noice

Yeah, this is the final motor. I'm not going for all out power as I have the cobra for that. This is more for peppy with that cammed pushrod sound.

In regards to the f cam, you don't have to flycut with that ca
? If not, then I may go that route. This car won't see boost ever. If I want more power it's going to go big block.

Steigmeier does it and is kind of the leader of it right now. POSI Racing also does it and is getting great results. Several other sources also do it.

Mine is a 03 that used to have the ported blower however is now a 2.2 Kenne Bell @ 19 psi in the ballpark of 600 rwhp.
