Re: 5.0 and 4.6 questions

96-98 = one of the weakest mustangs ever the 5.0 can make alot of horsepower and they are cheap and easy to build. Stock horsepower rating on a car over 10 years old doens't mean much to me. When i buy a car that age i'm definatly rebuilding it no matter what.

Re: 5.0 and 4.6 questions

i hopefully can find a one owner of the 302.there is a few around here that has set in garages since they were new instead of outside and not to much over 100k on them.but by the time i get the money for one they may not be one with low mileage.my uncle has a fox body with a 302 and its quick .i like the bore and stroke of the 302 after looking at it

Re: 5.0 and 4.6 questions

ya thats the power but the 302 is cheap to get add on power, if on a budget get heads and intake on 96 97 explorer and swap and thats a good improvement for like $100 out of a you pull it junk yard. But if your gana boar and stroke get alumion. heads you'll be 300+ if done right

If it only has 20K miles on it, I doubt you'd be rebuilding it......
Mileage and proper maintenance have more to do with wear & tear on mechanical components than how many times the Earth has went around the Sun.

That being said, what are your goals for the car? Intended use? Desired power level?

Re: 5.0 and 4.6 questions

its simple, the 5.0 is the better choice stock vs stock. The 4.6 is not as good of a motor IMO. The tq on the 5.0 is more also. The 5.0 can be made non slow much cheaper than the 4.6 can.

Re: 5.0 and 4.6 questions

Another vote for the 5.0, may be same HP rating, but the torque band > the 4.6

And there's nothing wrong with the T5s used in the GTs, very smooth shifting.. and mine took a beating

Re: 5.0 and 4.6 questions

5.0 (94-95) all the way. They take a beating and run for a long long time. Finishing up rebuilding one in a Bronco that has over 220k on the odo. Shortblock looked fine, just blew a headgasket. Did a little port job on the heads and it's going right back together for more abuse.

Re: 5.0 and 4.6 questions

I like my 95 GT. If your looking at a 94-98 stang i would go 5.0! But if I had to buy another stang today it would be a 03 04 Mach 1 BC they already have 300 HP and they look badass. And you can get one for $12000 these days. I like the PI 4.6 I had one and it was faster then my bolt on 5.0 and it was stock

Re: 5.0 and 4.6 questions

5.0 for fast on a budget, plus the SOHC 4.6L in 96-98 is simply horrid without a PI swap

I wouldn't buy a 10 year old car with 20k miles on it and if i did i definatly would rebuild it anyway

Re: 5.0 and 4.6 questions

Both 5.0 and 4.6 are OUTSTANDING engines!!! Very strong! 4.6 crank bearings can easlily look new with 200,000 miles. the 4.6 is obd II easier mods ( can also plug n play) and the 4.6 is also ohc! 5.0 easier to go faster! 5.0 more mechanical. 5.0 great hp for money spent.
