rear end tag

Does anyone know how to decypher the numbers on the rear end tag? I have a rear end out of what I was told a 90's Fox body and the code is 433C (I think, I'm at work don't have it with me)

The only thing I know is if it's a 8.8 the tag should say 88 73 for 2.73, 88 08 3.08, & 88 27 for 3.27 if it's the original tag.

Re: rear end tag

I think you are missing some numbers.

I tried to Google it and so far I'm finding tag numbers that look similar to this:

XXXX
2L73A75 XXX

2_73: rear end gear ratio (2.73:1)
_L__: Limited Slip Differential (either a "." or blank if it is open end)

_75: 7.5" rear end ring and pinion.

Re: rear end tag

It's all good. I was just clarifying my post. You were good on helping out, but I think the OP was lacking some numbers.

Re: rear end tag

Sorry I haven't been able to get back to this but now I have the tag, and the numbers on the tag are as follows:

433C

3SL73A887E20

Once again I don't know for sure what this rearend came out of. It is identical to the rear end in my 91' LX as in same width, four link, and four lug axles. The only difference is it is a disc brake rear end. I would like to know what ratio it is before I put it in the car. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

If it's the the original tag & gear set for that rearend it's an 8.8 with 2.73 gears. As far as the year you got me on that one. It could be from an 86ish-88 Thunderbird not 100%. A 93 Cobra came with 3.08's from the factory.

Re: rear end tag

Actually it might be 3.73 and yes probably from an '88. Usually if certain specifications are changed, the shop will indicate this on the tag (e.g., engine modifications, rear end mod).

Re: rear end tag

Are either of you sure about what your telling me? 2:73 or 3:73 theres a big difference. Can you explain to me why you think it is either? I would rather change the gears while it is out of the car. I get good gas milage with the car the way it is I just want to add the rear disc if I can.

Re: rear end tag

The only thing I know of is that the 86-93 V8 stangs most of them had either 2.73 or 3.08 gears. The gear upgrade would only be 3.27 all of theses are 4 lug with drums. The 84-85 svo's had 4 lug disc with a 7.5 not sure about the 86 model. The turbo coupes came with ( not 100% ) 8.8 4 lug with discs 3.55's. The Mach 1 & 03-04 cobra had 3.55's from the factory.I think that the 05's & up where the first years with the 3.73 option from the factory. The best thing to do while its out of the car is to put it on jack stands & pop off the rear cover to be for sure.

easier than that would be to spin the pinion until the wheel makes 1 full turn and count how many times you spun the pinion

Re: rear end tag

I also assume 4th gear is still the 1:1 gear ratio so you could probably drive between 70-75 MPH and read off your RPMs to get the gear ratio (~2730 RPM = 2.73:1; ~3730 RPM = 3.73:1; ~4100 RPM = 4.10:1).

I was hoping someone would know how to decypher the tag, maybe I can take it to a dealership to see if they can. Disappointed.

Re: rear end tag

i found this site, maybe if its the same diagram as what you see on your tag, then you can see what it came from.

Nothing to be disappointed about. Myself, Osiris Guy, iamdat, & v6stang04 gave you some pretty easy trouble shooting tips to do. I just bought an 8.8 from a 96gt for my car & I looked @ the tag & it read 08A88. Popped off the rear cover and 3.08 gears where in there. Do what iamdat suggested you do. If your not 100% pop the rear cover & check. The old rear end prob could use some fresh oil anyway.

What specific information were you hoping to get from the rear end tag?

Re: rear end tag

I wanted accurate info from the tag to tell me what the ratio is and maybe what it came out of. Thanks to all of you for your efforts.

What kinda trans you got?? My 94 is only a 4 speed auto, so for me 3rd is direct drive.

Another surefire way to tell what ratio it is.... Simply pull the cover and read the ring gear. The ratio will stamped on the outside of it! You may have to rotate it some, but its on there!

I have a Tremec TR-3560. This information, I should have said is only good for manual transmissions.

Although for the AOD/E and 4R70W transmissions 3rd gear would be the 1:1 gear ratio and one could apply the same concept.

The rear end is a 3 73 ratio with a factory semi-locker 8.8 "I know this for a fact."

3 SL 73 A88 7E20
3 semi-locker 73 8.8 ford production number

Only thing differrent is the semi-locker has springs in the rear end instead of the "S" style like the t-lock. I have delt with many rear ends and this is the facts. Usually the number for the gear ratio is near the bolt hole and sometime the bolt ruins the first number and it could be hard to figure out. If you have a rear end and have a tag on it "pm" me with the numbers and I will figure it out for you. Also fox body v8 mustangs did come with 3.73 from factory, I have seen many rear ends and also own two, one i'm not sure of the year but the one that i'm going to put in my stand is out of a 91 fox 5.0L that I know for a fact is factory because I know the guy that owned it from new.
