Im so fed up... please help.

It seems like I cant keep this POS running right for more than a week at a time. Here's the deal... My car seems to miss at high RPMs, or just while under WOT in general. So far Ive replaced the coil, cap, rotor, wires & plugs about 12k miles ago with autolite copper plugs. The wires are 8mm wires, nothing fancy. Ive had problems like this in the past and replaced the coil and it seemed to cure the problem for a while, now its back. I replaced the coil again and it didnt really help... so I need to figure out what the underlying problem is. I havnt changed anything on the car to make it start doing this, it just does. Timing is set at 13* i believe. What happens is when I just go straight to WOT, it feel like the car almost boggs, the tach will jump around, and it just wont feel right. Once I get into 3rd and 4th gear and take it up to 4500-5000 RPMs, the RPMs will skip real fast straight to 6k but it doesnt feel like im being "propelled" during that last 1k RPMs because it happens so quick. Its hard to describe, but thats the best I can do... anyone have anything they can suggest? Im so tired of all this crap constantly happening when I really take good care of the car with maintenance and everything. Please help.

I think tomorrow Ill try cleaning my TPS and MAF sensors just for piece of mind. Ive cleaned the MAF in the past 10k miles, but the TPS hanst been touched since I bought the car. TPS is on the throttle body correct? Can I clean it without actually removing it from the TB or does it need to be taken off? Tomorrow Im also going to pull the plugs and make sure they all look ok on the electrodes. Besides that, anyone have any other tips?

Hey Zimstang. I assume you have a 5speed in the car, since its a Cobra. How many miles on it anyways? Why I ask, is that it might be your clutch telling you that it might be due to be changed. Just an idea to throw out there.

80k miles... but when I throw it in 4th or 5th driving around, and then get on it, it wont rev up real high, then catch and rev back down like a classic slipping clutch.

When my tach started acting up my TFI module was going out.I know your module is in a different location than mine but it could be the cause.

whats TFI stand for?

Also, its not just the tach... you can feel the engine struggling at certain points (or whatever it is struggling)

Re: Im so fed up... please help.

im getting a lot of people saying it might either be the clutch, a bad injector, failing fuel pump, or clogged filter. I changed the filter right when I got the car about a year ago. My little brother ran it bone dry of gas at one point, but I wouldnt think a filter that's as new as it is would fail because of that... plus it drove fine for a while, then just started doing this. How do i check for a bad injector or tell if my fuel pumps failing?

Re: Im so fed up... please help.

That would expain why at WOT you start to have problems, the pump can't keep up with the demand. You don't have an excess of miles on it, but just the age will make it deteriorate. Before you do that however, run some Lucas fuel sys cleaner first. If you have a clogged injector that will clean those out and your problem is fixed without having to buy a $150 pump.

I would get it dyno tuned first and then go from there... can see exactly what your fuel is doing like SpectorV said.

Re: Im so fed up... please help.

Ill probably end up changing the pump anyway since Ill be supercharging it this summer... Im thinking a 255lph will be plenty, and Ill run that fuel system cleaner too and see if that helps out. When changing a pump, all you do is unstrap the tank, drop it down... then what? Im getting low on gas, so Ill probably run it until Im scared its out of gas to keep things on the lighter side. I have a jack so Ill just lower it down using that. How do I make sure the filler tube doesnt get caught up when I lower the thing down?

Sounds pretty fuel pumpish to me. Especially if you still have the stocker. I don't remember exactly how much power they will "support," but I can imagine it's struggling with the numbers you're putting out. Plus, this will be a good reason to go ahead and upgrade to a 255lph pump so you can hear the cool pump whine.

Of course, this is assuming you haven't already upgraded it. :dunno:

EDIT: Damn... just a little too slow.

It has enough slack that it wont really get caught up. i would recommend making a 2 person job out of it even tho one can do it. Definately use a jack tho. My nail JUST grew out the giant purple splotch from where I dropped the tank on it.

Drop the tank. There will be a little porthole looking panel that you take screws out of to remove. Pull the pump harness up out of the tank. Disconnect the old bucket being careful with your little floaty, reconnect the new one, stuff it all back in, and re bolt it. You will also need to disconnect fuel and vent lines going from your fuel filler under the fuel door. Also be sure to depressurize the fuel sys and disconnect the battery.

It's best to get a Hayne's or Chilton's if you don't alreaady have one to make sure I didn't forget anything and it gives you cool little pics.

Re: Im so fed up... please help.

Have you changed your worn Distributor shaft on that 5.0. The distributor on those are notorious for giving problems. As they wear the rotor at the top of the shaft sometimes makes good contact with the distributor contact points and sometimes it does not. It would cause missing and uneven idle at times as well as cause loss of Hp and bog in higher rpms. It will aslo make the tach most erratic.

Easiest way to check it out is take the distributor cap off and see if there is any side to side play in the internal shaft on the distributor. Also the distributor contact points some will look worn and some wont

I havnt personally changed the dizzy shaft, no. I bought the car with a new motor in it, so Im assuming the dizzy was new at the time. The cap and rotor are maybe 6k miles old, so I dont think that would be the problem. Ill go check the dizzy and see if I can move that shaft.

Those shafts were of inferior metal.it seems to be the most problem on 94-95 5.0's. As the distributors were being replaced in the newer cars I think ford skimped at the end. I have had numerous people PM me asking why their rotors and caps are wearing out after a few thousand miles.

It also might not be the problem but without being at the car You problems that you describe sound like a bad distributor. There should be absolutely ZERO side play. You might have some minute up and down play but again not a lot

The pump you need is a Walbro GSS340. All of the companies like edelbrock, holley, BBK, and all use a Walbro pump.

Walbro Ford High Performance Fuel Pump/Kit

So far, thats the cheapest place ive found for them. Thats the pump i have in my car, and it supports 22psi easily. Its all quiet, cant tell its aftermarket

You put a fuel pressure gauge on it? One that you can monitor while youre driving?

Your Walbro is quiet? Mine's ridiculously loud. It could have something to do with the fact that all the sound deadener has been gutted out of the car too though.

Re: Im so fed up... please help.

Just replaced the fuel filter and had the injectors cleaned... didnt help. It only happens under a heavy load such as WOT. I took it up almost to redline without gettin on it hard and it never happened. Only things I can think of now are fuel pump, wires, or plugs. I highly doubt the dizzy's bad...

I could do that in my TC when the pump died, took it up to redline, but not under WOT, and no problem, get under any boost, and it would act up.

Did you check the rotation of the shaft point to the magnetic pickup. If there is a gap you will have intermittent spark to the rotor
