2-4 hours depending if Murphy shows up and you can get the rear end way off the ground. if you do it by sliding under the car adds an hour to the job. If you are lucky to have it done on a lift it cuts time drastically.

I have a ? on gears.....
Do gears lower your top speed but allow you to reach it faster?
Do they kill your top end power?
Say if me and Kyle raced from a 60 roll. When I take off how will it differ from how I take off now?

Re: gears officially go in

well they dont limit your top end much more than the aerodynamics of the car limit it. With out a limiter you should still be able to go much faster than you need to go still.

The issue people have is that they have an rpm cut off and your rpms are higher so you hit it faster. If you dont have this or you have changed it you should be fine.

Gears do not lower your top speed, unless (like Spec said) you have an electronic speed governor. Then you will reach the limiter quicker.

That aside, they probably will increase your top speed. Most cars are not limited by lack of gear, but rather by aerodynamics. The gears will help you overcome this problem.

Also, gears absolutely do not kill your top end power. They don't affect your power period. All they do is change the ratio of turns of the driveshaft to turns of the wheels.

Re: gears officially go in

A stock Mustang GT weighs in at about 3500lbs, its engine has a horsepower rating of 225hp and a torque rating of say 300 lb. /ft of torque mass. let’s see what gears can do for us. Your typical Mustang has a first gear ratio of about 3.3:1 (in the 96-up cars.) So by taking its torque of 300*3.3, you now have 990lb/ft of torque to help your car take off. That's still not enough to make for trouble free take-off. Now take that number and use rear-end gears of say 3.27:1 to multiply that onto the wheels you now have 3237lb/ft of torque to accelerate you. While this is a healthy number, its still less than your car weighs. Let’s see what happens when we install say 4.30:1 gears to the car with 3.27’s. 300*3.3*4.30=4257lb/ft of torque! That’s a increase of 1000lb/ft torque, 1020lb/ft to be exact that will help your car off the line. This means less bogging, and a car that is extremely fun to drive. By this example, you can see the advantage of a numerically higher gear ratio.

Re: gears officially go in

Without the speed calibration your speedo will be off (which is no big deal if you know how much it is off which can be calculated) and your mileage will climb faster that reality as well...or slower...pretty sure it will climb faster. So, for every 1 actual mile you drive, I think the car will think it is like 1.7 miles since you are going from 2.8 whatever gears to 4.10s.

Your speedo will be off by quite a bit..

What do you want to know about the break in how long it should be till you change fluid and how long till you can flog it?

Re: gears officially go in

He basically wants to know the same thing I was asked by someone else...but I am not an expert on it.

1.) What is the break in time
2.) Do you have to change the fluid after the break in time

My answer used a serious assumption...when you buy a new car, you don't have to break in anything nor change the rear end fluids after a few miles.

I suggested you go easy for 50-100 miles to ensure everything is seated, after that go for it.

Like I said, I know nothing about it...just comparing to new parts that go into cars.

So, if the knowledgeable would chime in, hopefully I can give the proper answers.

Re: gears officially go in

if you really wanted to be anal you should drive the car (EASY) until the gears in the back get hot and then let it cool off for about an hour, do this a few times and you should be good. I would change the fluid and inspect it to see if you have any major issues with metal comming off.

Can we get an official "I know this because" answer from someone though? You answer sounds like mine which is basically just a personal thought/recommendation. Can any of y'all official mechanic types chime in so we can have an informed answer?

Re: gears officially go in

Break-In
Any overloading or overheating will cause the oil to break down and the ring gear and pinion will fail. A ring gear and pinion installation, especially a high numeric ratio with new bearings, can cause an excessive heat build up in the rear end and cause softening of the gear teeth and bearings if a break-in is not performed.
Break-in Procedure - All vehicles and all applications:
To break-in the installation, perform a run-in prior to driving with the rear wheels jacked up, operating at idle speed in high gear for a minimum of five (5) minutes. Then drive the vehicle 10 miles at a normal speed, let cool for one (1) hour and then repeat entire process again.
Notes for Special Use Vehicles:
Vehicles used for Towing:
Vehicles used for towing need approximately 200 - 300 miles of normal street driving before being used for towing.
Circle track race cars:
Make approximately 6 - 8 laps at slow speed, then let cool for 30 minutes, make 6 -8 laps more at slow speed, then 2 -3 laps at full speed, let cool again for 30 minutes.
Drag cars:
Drag cars need only an initial run-in since they are driven short distances and heat is not normally a problem with proper lubrication and backlash allowances.
