Re: first mod?

Put some tailpipes back on it...

Seriously though, the stainless pipe are a big part of what make the 5.0 LXs look so badass.

After that, I'd say gears: 3.73s for a 5 speed and 4.10s for an auto.

Re: first mod?

a notch back with out a nice polished stainless set of tail pipes is hardly a notch at all.

Re: first mod?

Id go the usual bolton route, UDP, exhaust, gears, etc. Also could up your timing, take off the smog/ac/ps if ya want.

Re: first mod?

Previously owned a 25th anniversary GT...

1. Gears.
2. UDP (nice gains for me!)
After that, you gotta spend some $. Most simple boltons will
"nickle & dime you to death" for minor gains. Lay out some ideas
and I'll try and help you avoid the wasted steps and do it right.

Spec is right, tails look nice but in your setup would cost a couple HP possibly.
I'd get a complete exhaust at some point, but for now your good, depending
on how far you want to take it...

Re: first mod?

i want to take it pretty damn far.. but just enough to where i can go up to a lot of cars and spank them, including corvettes.. hehe.. but tail pipes i agree.. i hear motive has 390 gears? wouldnt that be a better gear choice since i have an auto, i mean i want to be able to cruise on the freeway, specially where i'm from its mainly freeways..or should i free up the exhaust?

Re: first mod?

Headers back exhaust would be my first mod on any 5.0 car.

A set of gears, which i hear 3.90's work well for an auto, but you cant trust my word on that, i want to put 5-speeds in everything i own.

Put an electric fan on it. Pulleys. Advance your timing. Then, save up for real mods.

Re: first mod?

390 is an excellent choice for gears if your not quite wanting the steepness that comes with 410's... you probably wouldn't want 3.73's on an auto. my father has been running 390's on his hot rods every since I can remember, he started running those back in the day because you wouldn't have an overdrive tranny in a hot rod (68 fastback, mustang 2's, 70 boss) and turning 4.5-5.5K at 65 miles an hour down the interstate gets old quick... at least this way he was able to keep it around 3-3.5

Re: first mod?

the damn 3.90s are just damn expensive, Ive only seen motive making them. Id just run a 4.10 with a 28" tire = 3.90 rear basically. then goto the track with 26" tires and you have all of your gearing back.

Re: first mod?

FYI:

I actually saw an old mag article where they used 3.55's and a shift kit
and had better track times with street tires than 3.73's and shift kit.
Less tire spin. BTW, it will only get worse with more power in most cases.
The key here is "street tires". If you get DR's or slicks, then you can handle more gearing.
