331

ordered a 331 from DSS

wondering what you guys think

gt-40P heads (for now) 1.90 valves
cam (E-303) going in the trash looking to go comp suggestions welcome
professional products typhoon intake (aka edelbrock performer RPM) one inch spacer
hoping for 280 or so at the wheels for the time being with SCT tune
still have my 19 pounders with corresponging C&L
1.6 ford racing rollers
thinking 16 mpg possible?

T5 (new from factory)
3.73 gears

for future
possible AFR 185's (upgrade springs and rockers with cam)
keep same intake just junk the spacer possibly
will probably have to upgrade to 25 pounders at this point... 14 MPG?

im truely excited about going 331, the guy at DSS claims that even with the wimpy gt-40's the feel will be night and day difference over a 306

Re: 331

15-16 MPG highway 13-15 around town + track runs

DSS 331/93 cobra heads, oversized valves/port work.. 1.7 RRs + anderson motorsports N41 cam.. times in sig.. can be improved with better traction

IMO the gt40 heads are choking my setup.. once I get more income I'm getting AFR 185s and a better upper/lower intake..

3.73s + t5

Re: 331

Nice video, actually sounds surprisingly alot like my car now (except you can here the difference in cam)

I guess thats not bad for the loss in gas mileage, I was getting 18-20 mpg on the highway with 16-18 city and then 13-16 if my foot was in it the whole time.

its a little hard news to me, considering that I like to joy ride (but I do have a bike too) and premium is 3.20 a gallon now which i'll probably have to stick with because my heads are so short now.

Re: 331

believe me the performance difference just due to displacement alone more than makes up for the gas mileage

Re: 331

Re: 331

Congrats on the 331.

I'd say give Ed Curtis at FTI a call for the cam. His custom cams are only $325. Even the Comp Xtreme Energy line runs right at $250, so it's not all that much more for a custom. If you do get a Comp cam, I'd say probably either the XE264HR or the XE270HR (what I have) would work pretty well.

Re: 331

well initially I want a cam that'll work for my heads... however the heads may be the next mod.

im in a possition of living very cheap for the next year or two so i'll probably want something cheap cam wise right now, and go with a custom or something after a set of AFR's

Re: 331

I called comp cams hotline and they actually recommended the XE282HR

seems like alot of cam to me, but I was told the extra displacement pulls the operating range back down to where i'd like it. (below 6K)

Re: 331

Damn, that is kinda big. I'd call back and talk to somebody else. Then wait a few hours, call again, and see if you get someone else. Whichever gets the most votes, wins!

Re: 331

I called them again... and upon talking to another guy he recommened the XE274HR

which seems a bit more realistic... i got alot more in depth with his as to what im looking for in the car as well and he was well familiour with my GT-40P heads.
upon asking him why I kept getting such large suggestions when I felt I didn't have the required equipment he told me that thats why I kept getting those suggestions with the larger displacement I needed the bigger cam as a way to make up for the heads..

seems to make sense I guess we will see.

Re: 331

The 274 sounds a lot more like it. I wouldn't say you need a bigger cam to make up for the heads though. The valve events of the cam are supposed to coincide with the flows of the head... not make up for a lack of flow.
