Couple questions for ya

I want to take the factory exhaust off my 95 GT and replace it with something with a little more rumble. What I would like to know is, is it worth putting headers on since I still have the stock intake or will there be little to no improvement from them if I don't get a different intake?

Next question. I've read about a 4 degree timing advance that is an all around improvement. For gasoline, how much octane do you recommend if I do this? I would think 91 at least, but can you get by with 87 if need be?

Thanks to everybody who helps.

Headers would be a great improvement despite a stock intake. The stock manifolds are very restrictive. 10 degrees base timing is about all you can get on 87 octane. If you go higher than that, it will probably ping and you'll have to run 89 or even premium. If you want to run 87 i would set the timing to 10 degrees and see if it pings, it not your good to go. If it does, back it down a bit until it doesn't ping anymore. When you go out and drive it, go full throttle and drive a bit with the a/c on. Basically find ways to put a load on the engine and listen for pinging. I had mine set around 12 and i had to run premium so now i set it 14 and i might even be able to get it up to 16 if im lucky.

I wouldn't worry about changing the headers unless you are changing the mid-pipe at the same time. The stock 5.0 headers actually aren't bad at all. They are actual headers instead of exhaust manifolds. You can gain a little bit of power by swapping them out, but it probably isn't going to be worth it on a mostly stock car. If you are going to be chaning the mid-pipe too though, you might as well do it all at once.

As for the timing, it's just something you have to play around with it. With the stock heads, I'd say that if I was going to do anything it would be to bump it up to 14 and run 93 (or 91 if that's what they have in your area). Of course, you should always listen very closely for any pinging. If you hear any, drop it back down a degree or two.

save up and buy a good set of heads/cam/intakes and then install all of those.

Re: Couple questions for ya

Oh I plan on going from the front to the back with the exhaust because it's still got the complete factory exhaust on it. I just wasn't sure if the headers would be worth it with the stock intake.

Thanks guys.
