Roll Cage Install

After studying the photos from the accident at Hub City, I'm pretty convinced a roll cage/bar would be a good idea for my GT. I'd like one with both driver and passenger swing-away bars to ease getting in and out. Back seat is not important.

Has anyone done a cage in their street/strip Mustang and have words of advice?

Re: Roll Cage Install

I keep hearing that that guy was running stock suspension on that car... a roll cage it a great idea, but skimping on the suspension on that fast of a car is just as stupid

I also read on another board that that was a pretty crazy freak accident type of crash. God-Speed to his family.

Re: Roll Cage Install

My prayers go for his wife and family. If what I've read is true, it was his first pass in that car (essentially a 10.5 Outlaw car) during Test & Tune. As you say, an odd, freaky accident. Unfortunately, Scott is gone at age 28.

What got me thinking was my little car runs easy mid sevens with the 302. The new engine should make it 200 HP quicker. It's really just a street car.

Maybe it's that I'm just getting old (a given) and my FOD Factor (Fear of Death) is not as low as it used to be.

The GT is an occasional use vehicle so a roll bar wouldn't hamper much.

We have some amazing cage builders up here...That is sad that he lost his life but everyone including him and his family knows that anything can happen when on the track or the street.I guess what im trying too say is it comes with the territory you race, you take a chance of something like that happening.

That is awesome. That should keep you safe. It looks like a custom design and build. Is it?

Re: Roll Cage Install

in jersey, if you are running faster than i think 11 seconds, (don't hold me to this), you are required to install a cage. i think it varies for verts too, im going to have to look up the law for it

verts are generally a second slow for cages vs hard tops I think.

i think it's differnt for every track versus a regional basis....edgewater in cincinnati has differnt cage regs. than national trails in columbus.

Drag Racing Safety Tech :: Stangbangerz :: Cincinnati's Premiere Mustang Website

13.99 requires a roll bar for convertibles, 11.99 for anything else. That's the NHRA recommendation that most tracks will go by.

Except, that, this is the deep south...and well, billy bob really doesn't care unless it is an NHRA sanctioned event.

Re: Roll Cage Install

all the tracks around here are NHRA sanctioned and make you go by NHRA rules regardless of the event.

I always go by NHRA restrictions, but only so that I can travel to out of state events and race and I don't have to worry, not to mention huntsville dragway is NHRA.

not that im busting your balls, cause your right.. i've seen a few small tracks that just don't care.

Re: Roll Cage Install

Both of ours are NHRA sanctioned tracks as well, but if it isn't a sanctioned event, they do not enforce the 13.99 vert rule...they only enforce the 13.99 helmet rule...then a cage below 11.

Re: Roll Cage Install

Current NHRA and IHRA regulations require a roll bar at 13.49 in convertibles and 11.49 in hardtops. A roll cage is required in hard tops at 11.00, or when the car exceeds 135 MPH. Some IHRA tracks interpret the cage rule differently since that book is very difficult to understand due to its wording, and some tracks are less strict with the rules. I've seen guys get tossed at some NHRA tracks for no cage at 135.4 MPH, and I've seen some tracks let convertibles make several 11.20 passes with no warning and no bar. To be on the safe side, you should conform to the NHRA rule book, and the horrible looking wreck at the top of this thread is a good illustration why.

Re: Roll Cage Install

Oh, I agree about that. I know if I went to the track religiously, hell...even periodically, I would put a 6 point in my car. However, since I see the track maybe once a year, I am not worried about it. My noise all comes on the street...
