Building Engine from scratch Parts list

Ok, working on my parts list for building the 302 that's been sitting in my car port for almost a year now. Since I've never built a motor from scratch before, I want to come up with a list of parts I'll need to do it. I need to sit down and definitively say where I want to go with the motor before I assign actual part numbers to the various items...so I just need to make sure I'm not forgetting anything.

Ok, here's my list of parts needed so far. Some things are left off on purpose like gaskets, seals, and flywheel and what not.

Bottom End:
  • Engine Block
  • Crank
  • Balancer
  • Main Bearings
  • Cam
  • Cam Bearings
  • Push Rods
  • Lifters
  • Rods
  • Rob Bearings
  • Rod Bolts
  • Pistons
  • Rings
  • Wrist Pins

Top End:
  • Heads
  • Valves
  • Valve Guides
  • Valve Springs
  • Retainers
  • Rocker Arms
  • Lower Intake Manifold
  • Carb

Externals:
  • Water Pump
  • Oil Pump
  • Oil Pickup Tube
  • Oil Pan
  • Alternator
  • Distributor
  • Valve Covers
  • Timing Chain
  • Timing Cover

Re: Building Engine from scratch Parts list

That would be the basic list...like you said, from here it all depends on where you want to go. Your heads will be the deciding factory on alot of those parts as well as the cam.

Personally...if you're gonna go from scratch I'd say Eagle stroker rotating assembly (I might can get you a deal on this), custom ground comp cam (again...could possibly get a deal on this), AFR heads (as wild as you feel like going) and enough parts to hold everything together to 7k in a pushrod.

Sounds like a good project. Can't wait to see it unfold.

Re: Building Engine from scratch Parts list

If i could go back and redo my engine build I would have organized better and made sure I had every single part I needed. And had alot more brake parts cleaner.
