Yeah... you won't gain anything without at least some intake/exhaust mods.. If anything you'll lose some bottom end torque, and the stock intake/exhaust is so restrictive you'll gain nothing top-end.. so yeah

My 89 ran a high 13 with an E303 cam, GT40 upper/lower intake, BBK cold air intake/shorty headers/midpipe and flowmaster catback... I'm pretty sure it made a difference, but on a bone stock motor.. stock cam works fine...

Re: cam hp?

If you are going through the work to install a cam you really should do heads/intakes while you are at it.

Re: cam hp?

save up and get you a set of AFR165/185 heads and a custom cam (NOT AN E303!) along with a nice set of intakes then you will be VERY happy (300+rwhp/tq)

Re: cam hp?

A cam has the lowest cost per horsepower ratio of any modification you can do on a Mustang. You might as well do heads and intake while you are at it though. A typical H/C/I combination is around 350 HP SAE Net.

Re: cam hp?

the best thing to do is to look at other people's combinations that are tried and true and replicate one that you really like, and don't just pick the most insanely fast combination as well, look at drivability in your equation. thats going to be your best bet if your just starting out.

i personaly wouldn't recommend a true dual system...i recommend some sort of crossover tube and i think everyone here would agree, especially for a street car. u are gonna get mixed opinions on cam selection..i run an e-303 with 1.7 roller rockers, and stock heads...of course my heads are ported/portmatched intake & exhaust...bbk and mac exhaust. i'm pretty happy with it. if u r on a budget, i would reccomend larger throttle body and headers minimum. u r still bottleneck'n the system with a stock intake but u will get better results than with just a cam...like everyone else said, u will b truely disapointed by just putting in a cam. just remember, when you are choosing cam, and intake, bigger isn't always better. don't expect to set the world on fire with a 7500rpm intake and 7200rpm cam and a rev limit of 6250rpm...be realistic on how u r gonna drive the car. smaller/milder matched parts work better than larger unmatched parts. like somone else said, u should go with a proven set-up "modeled after someone else's car" till u get sum experience and try to design your own...keep your budget in mind when building...if u buy one part, how may other bigger parts are u gonna have to buy to support that one part. itsa vicious cycle of money spending in the quest for power...btw..even though i personaly like e-cams...they suk on stock heads.

Re: cam hp?

I agree with a kit. Go with a TrickFlow Track Heat, Holley Systemax kit, or something of the sort. Everything is included in the kit for the upgrade. 360 or so hp. That means 130+ hp gain over stock for 2200 bucks.
