Mufflers

Ok so here I am on the classic muffler post...I want louder...Right now I'm running Hooker Super Comp Shorties, BBK Off-Road H-Pipe, and Dynomax Super Turbo Mufflers with no cats. I'm only looking to replace the mufflers right now, and I do not want dumps or open headers. Any suggestions on mufflers? I've been wondering about those new Flowmaster Super 44's...

Re: Mufflers

My Borla mufflers (little round mufflers not full size) are quite loud vs most cars with only mufflers.

I heard a car with Spin-tech Sportsman Street mufflers, long-tubes and 2.5" x-pipe the other day.... sounded pretty damn good! Kinda tempting to give up my plan for Magnaflows on my next car.

Re: Mufflers

Well, for one thing they use thin, VERY thin, metal. Also the flange that mounts to the head isn't one solid piece. There are 4 seperate tubed that go to the header. I just don't like em.

What are you trying to say? :beatyou:

Cherry makes several types of mufflers now, not just the straight through glasspacks. I'd probably put them up there with flowmaster. They've been around for about the same time. I heard some straight throughs on a 67 Camaro with a 383, H/C/I, and some serious duration on the cam. Sounded awesome. But he had the motor to go with the sound. Made me want a set. Can't just throw them on something and expect them to sound good, though.

I'm with Yellow. You get what you pay for.

Re: Mufflers

Don't want to create an argument (every vehicle is a bit different) but I've had a great experience with my Mac long tubes. I had them ceramic coated as soon as I got them (cost more than the headers) and they have been on the car for five years with not a problem. They still look great. It may be that I don't take them on and off a lot.

Do any of you have experience (+/-) with Mac catalytic converters? Chattanooga, TN now has a smog check and cats must be in place to even get tested. I'd heard that Mac has quit producing the catted H-pipe for long tubes. Know anything about that? Any "sure-fit" alternatives for their cats. Want to keep an H-pipe rather than an X-pipe.
Thanks,
Jim

Re: Mufflers

I'd take a set of Magnaflow cats and put them right in front of the mufflers. There should be room to weld them in there. :yup:

It's weird how many mixed opinions I've heard about MAC. And it's always a love or hate, not inbetween.

Re: Mufflers

my mac headers have a tube that's not very straight. we used 4ft. pry bar to get the damn things on last time. and then that tube still leaked. the mufflers rock though. i guesse i will stick to the higher quality ebay vendor knock-off's. believe it or not, i have never had any problem with ebay parts. with my experience so far, i have taken lotsa stuff back to jeg's, but never have had to mail back a part to a ebay vendor...guesse i'm lucky.

yea, thought the x was worth .5 hp over an h anyway...lol. i know that the sound is somewut differnt with an x as opposed than h. i never had an h on my car so i can't comment on the sound differnce, and my girlfriends 90 gt has stock mufflers, which means the fuel pump rumbles more than anything else.

Re: Mufflers

I miss the ole prochambers! weren't those a bag of fun? sounded great on 4.6's

back to the subject, the only problem I ever had with mac was a set of shorties I had, I didn't like them because they like many headers don't have the common flange all the way across where it meets the head, heat cycle those guys a couple of times and getting them back on is a real problem!
I swapped to ford motorsport, which I really don't like either for a different reason.
