95 GT Speedo

I just purchased a 95 GT and the speedo is reading fast by about 5 miles an hour. Anyone have the same problem? What would fix this?

Re: 95 GT Speedo

Well reading fast is better than reading slow (less risk of a ticket!)

How do you know its off? Have you tried comparing RPM to speed? (There are calculators online where you put in the final drive ratio, the trans ratio for the specific gear and the size of the wheels/tires and can get speed from RPM or vice versa)

Could be a few things throwing it off, incorrect speedo gear in trans, different gear ratio, different wheel size..

Re: 95 GT Speedo

I use my GPS. It reads in my deville perfect and before I did I was getting passed by every car on the road. It seems to be off more the slower I go. Sometimes I go down my gravel drive and it dosent even move the needle until im going about 20mph or so. My tires and wheels match stock specs. I heard of gear going out on odometer but nothing about speedometer.

Previous owner probably put different gears in the rear, get a bigger speedo gear for your transmission.

Re: 95 GT Speedo

speedo gears just plug into the trans (has different number of teeth) but its not always 100% fix. You can figure out based on your rear ratio in 4th gear (1:1 gear) what rpm you are at at X mph and calculate your final drive to determine what gear you need.

You probably have 3.73 or 3.27s vs stock 2.08s or 2.73s~

Im running less then 2000 rpms at 55 mph in fifth. I figure its stock gearing. Car was owned by a farmer and his daughter drove it while in college. Had 96,000 miles when I got it
