Correct speedo gear????

I have a 1989 mustang coupe 4 cyl conversio with a t5 transmission. It has stock 4 cyl gauges. It has a 8.8 with 3.73 gears. What is the correct speedo gear I need for it? 19, 20, 21, 23 tooth?

Re: Correct speedo gear????

there is no "correct" as far as making it 100% correct with 3.73 gears. Depending on the computer setup you have you may can do a dallas speedcal unit. It plugs in between the VSS sensor on the trans and the computer and alters the signal going to the computer from the trans. You leave the stock tooth gear in the trans and just flip some switches to calibrate it for any size tire and any gear ratio pretty much. If this wont work (best option since you cant do it in a tune) then you can run I think a 21 or 23... but it wont be accurate it will still be 5-7mph off (it gets worse as the MPH increases... you may be somewhat accurate at 55 but not at 15 or what not)

Thanks. Don't really want a ticket because of it being inaccurate. Lol. Got a guy here in rock hill that has worked at a dealership and done many repairs on fords and he owns a few also. I'll see what he thinks about it. It's carbourated though. No computer.

You have a 89 V8 with T5 and 3.73's you will need a 21 tooth.

Re: Correct speedo gear????

an 89 may have a different output shaft speedo gear and different gearing, try the 21 tooth, but dont trust it. Get someone to help you test the speed to see. The only true way to fix it otherwise is to change the output shaft gear as well as the 21 tooth so they match up right

Yea. Thanks. That's also what my dad was saying. How hard is it to replace the shaft?

Re: Correct speedo gear????

I put a 21 and then a 23 tooth in my 97 with 3.73 up from 2.73s and it was 5-7mph off~ all the time the lower the speed the closer it was of course. The speedcal is the best way to go but its only for 94 up

I believe 94+ can be used with the speedcal unit when a speedo tooth is not adaquate to fix. You need to reinstall the factory tooth speedo gear before using one though.

Well, I ordered a 21 tooth, got it today. Took the old one out and compared them and the old one is a 21 also. I don't know if y'all thought that I didn't have one at all or what. So, I put the new one in anyways. Didn't think it would work because nothing was wrong with the old one. And it still doesn't work. I know I could take the cluster out and see if the thing was atleast trying to turn the needle. Any ideas??

Well for you application that is the gear you should need. Give our tech guys a shout and see what they have to say. You can reach them at tech@cjponyparts.com make sure you explain to them everything you have and what's going on. If anyone will have answers and solutions it will be those guys.

Well if you need help figuring out what gear you need then it tells you how to do it. My question is, is your speedo working at all if it isn't then you probably need a new dash cluster.

Nope, neither does the stock tach, all other guages work, the mile counter doesn't work.

Well the speedo only has a few things that can go wrong, 1st the cable, 2nd the speedo gear/or the gear in the tranny, 3rd the cluster itself. The tach is electrical and for it to work right must be a v8 cluster unless it has the switch you can turn that is usually at the top of the cluster itself near the tach side. My old 79 had the switch but I don't know if the newer ones had it.

Id say you most likely need a new cluster. But if you pull the speedo cable out of the tranny and spin the gear with your hand then the speedo should move. If it does then you need a gear in the tranny witch isn't hard to change. If it doesn't then you need a cable or a cluster.
