351w 1979 mustang wont start

I've been building 79 with a 74 351w. I have done most of the work myself but the first owner put In a electric fuel pump, the engine is in and ready to start it turns over but fire up. I did time it to a 302 because of the 302 cam and I'm not sure about the fuel pump it sounds like it running all the time. I have the mech fuel for the 302 will that work in a 351w. Any help is good thank you.

Re: 351w 1979 mustang wont start

Dude,Is this motor injected or carbed? If injected,Check fuel pressure
at FR schrader valve w/a tester. There should be I think 60/70psi.
straight sys. pressure from pump to rail with regulator vac.port plugged and eng.off not running,Any less than it's the pump that's faulty. But if there's fuel up in vac. hose, replace regulator. Mech. pump you got should work on your 351w.

first of all wich 302 cam ??? if its an h.o. cam it has the 351w firing order / did you check the timing ? TDC ? If its squirting fuel through the carb and you have spark at the plugs then its a timing issue ,or firing order

It is a carb engine and the timing is for a non HO and so is the cam, when I hook up the batterie the fuel pump is humming all the time so it must be wired in wrong but I am going to put in the mech pump, then at least I know I'm getting fuel. Whats the best way to check for spark? Thanks you guys.

I usually just take an old plug and plug it into the coil wire and have someone crank the engine if it sparks, well, you got your fire. Low light works best, and doing this you can also check each cylinder as well. Just don't touch it while its cranking. Not fun, trust me lol.
