Opinion on 1990 5.0 Hatch

I found a 1990 for sale for 1650 right down the road from me and am considering selling my car for 1500 and getting that (move up from a 4cyl to a v8) and the person selling it said this about the car:

The fuel rails need to be replaced because it's not getting enough fuel also the pressure plate is sticking and it's not disengaging the clutch. I also slammed the door and shattered the drivers side window. As far as mechanical those are the ONLY 2 things it needs I will tell you that it does need some cosmetic work as well. It would be a project for someone but not a big one. The gears shift fine and it doesn't leak any fluids nor doe it smoke. I'm a stay at home mom so I'm around most of the time if you want to see it. It runs and has been driven until yesterday and that's when I attempted to drive it and it didn't want to go in gear so I had it looked at and he said the springs in the pressure plate are worn and that's what is causing it not to shift.

Re: Opinion on 1990 5.0 Hatch

I'm just wondering what all could be potentially wrong and what to look for and at when I go to look at the car this weekend....

Fuel rails?? Probably not....
The clutch thing sounds rather legit, but it sounds more like the clutch is probably just out, but who knows. Sounds like a lot of work for the price, depending on the condition of the car.
Make sure you get under it and check for rust, especially the floorboards and the torque boxes.
If the body and interior is in really good shape, and the engine runs, then its worth it. If not, I know you want the V8 rumble, but if its a POS, look at something else!
Regardless, don't just give the asking price, bump it down a couple hundred. When you start going over the car with a fine tooth comb with the owner there, they will be more willing to go down on price. Hope this helps.

A crappy car you have to keep throwing money at to keep it going will frustrate you. Trust me, been there done that.

Yeah the car it self didn't look crappy in the photos, I was just worried that there might be something up with the transmission. The fuel rails I'm sure I could figure them out. Only thing is that I have to be able to get 1500 for my car which will be a hard thing to do seeing as it needs quite a bit of work

Can you post some pics of the 5.0 or post a link if you can? Cause it said it needed some "cosmetic work"

I think she's talking about the interior mostly, if you look at the seat it has a tear in it but on the passenger side behind the door it looks like it has a dent in it:

Looks pretty good. I would offer like $1450 and see what happens. Maybe meet in the middle somewhere. But wait till you have cash in hand. I would give $1500 even with the problems. A few hundred bucks and some work, it would probably be a nice driver. Doing a clutch on a fox is cake, and it also gives you the opportunity to upgrade it for later when you do mods!

Another concern of mine is that the fly wheel itself is bad due to the clutch being gone and her trying to drive it. If so any idea how much those would set you back??? By the way will be putting in a racing clutch if I get it (dad tends to burn clutches up like crazy)

You will probably want to get it resurfaced anyway, and that wont set you back maybe $20 or $30 for that. You shouldn't need a new one. I've seen exploded pressure plates and clutch discs worn down to the rivets and a good resurfacing cleaned the flywheel up just fine.

LOL. I remember those days. My dad is a GM Guy, and has always had Trans Am's. He has a 94 now. When I was 16 I wasn't "allowed" to have a Ford let alone anything fast!! He has always been mad that I preferred Ford cause he hates them, and I HATE GM.

He doesn't want to sell because he already got me a car and doesn't think that I should be getting another one, but he doesn't realize he would be paying less for this than he did for my car if we get it for 1450. And if we got 1500 for mine and couldn't negotiate the price down I have 275 to give to him to cover the difference.....

My son is only 3 months old, but I'm going to make sure he grows up being a "driver" that way when he is old enough, we can get him a V8. Hopefully he will be responsible enough to have it.

Just a thought on your fuel problem. When was the fuel filter changed? Also a bad fuel pressure regulator can cause problems, and maybe even some clogged injectors. Never really heard problems with fuel rails. Just a thought.

Yeah my dad tells me all the time how I'm responsible and he'd trust me with a big motor like that, I have all ways been for speed on the track not the streets. Not saying I'm exempt from doing stupid things but I understand that speed is for the track. Seems he thinks otherwise......

I was thinking pressure regulator too. He'll, could be as simple as the fuel filter. That would only take ya 10 minutes and a screwdriver.

Yeah, don't think I'll ever do that. Cops always pop up when you don't want them to down here, Dad's gotten a couple of speeding tickets. At least they didn't get him for doing 140 down the highway in his ram srt-10
