tires

Hopefully should be buying new tires for my 88 fox soon. Just wanted an opinion on which kind to get. I would like to get something good for street & track as I hope to get her to the track soon. Hoping not to spend a fortune, but if i have to I’ll put it off for a while so I can save up for the right ones.

So what do you recommend and what kind of experience you’ve had with certain tires?

Re: tires

if its one or the other tires should be around 80-110 each. I would compare on Home - Discount Tire Direct and then call em and see what kind of deal they can work up, they are good to work with. They gave me free road hazard on a set of tires... and I had to replace two of them a week apart. They didnt ask any questions and shipped me a new tire free of charge. Also, when the tires wore out early they prorated my new tires based on miles they should have got.

Re: tires

Nittos would be a good idea. A lot of people have had good luck with the NT05's from them. They are a good street tire but are sticky enough to hold launching on stock 03/04 cobras. Don't get the drag radial version tho as they are not good in rain.

I had great results from the nitto 555's when I had my GT as well. It would do well on the street and hold good enough at the track.

If it's for nice days only, you could look at nitto 555R drag radials or the new nitto NT05R drag radials. The 555R's will last you about 15-20k miles depending on the number of burnouts you do. The NT05R's will last you about 5-10k miles depending on the burnouts but will stick a lot better than the 555R's will.

I was able to get about 15k out of a set of 555R's when I had them on the cobra. I had those on there twice and got around 15k out of each set.

I had 30k on a set of regular 555's on my GT but did a ton of burnouts on them so they were down to about 30% tread left. I had over 30k miles on the set I put on the cobra, but those were just in the front, so that doesn't count.

For the fox, I would go with the 555R's. You'll get decent life out of them for the type of tire, and you'll get decent traction as well. And if you do get caught in a freak rain, you'll get better traction than the NT05R's would.

If you're just not concerned about the track all that much, I'd go with the regular NT05's though. You'll get a little more life out of them at a little cost of traction over the 555R's...but they will run you about $40 or so more per tire than the 555R's.

For the fronts, I would just get the regular 555's or NT05's though. I have the regular NT05's on the front of my car right now...and have run the 555's before. Either will work great. You'll get a little more road steering from the 555's due to the direction tread...but it is a good tire.

Re: tires

from what i'm seein on discount tire direct, 153/ea for 555rs and 177/ea for nt05rs (estimate size i would need)

i think i would rather go with the 555rs. can they be used all around the car?

No, get the regular 555's for the fronts. You "could" use them in the front, but there really is no need to and with the soft compound you would wear them down real fast. The regular 555's are a much harder compound.

Re: tires

I think you'll like those. I did on the cobra when it was stock. They would break loose a bit at street pressures, but that was 35 psi. When I lowered it down to around 30 psi, it got much better. But then I did a pulley swap....and then I did a ported blower swap and the closer I got to 500 hp the less they would hold.

The fox...they should hold plenty fine.

Re: tires

not looking good. i'm currently running 255/40/17 all the way around. wouldn't mind going a little skinnier in the front. def. can't go taller.

for the 555's they have the 255/40/17's like i need.

for the 555r's the closest they have is 275/40/17... not sure if i can squeeze that size tire in the rear. anyone with a fox body know if this will fit?

if not i guess i would get the 555's all around and buy a pair of rims with drag radials for the track. unless i find another kind of tire i like with right size.

Looked around more. They have the nt-01 drag radials in the size I need. I just don't know if it would look ok having the 555s up front. The 555r has a similar pattern even thought it's considered drag radial.

Opinions?

Re: tires

You don't want the nt01s. Nt05s ok, but not the 1s.

Nitto dr's will run narrower than other brands tho so you should be good for width. It's the extra height that may be an issue.

They have the 555r in 275/40/17. The guy from Nitto said it may not fit on 17x8s. Idk if I should chance it or not

I had the 315s on my 17x9 and they didn't bulge much at all.

Re: tires

The 275/40/17s will fit a 17x8. Nitto tires run extremely narrow. I personally wouldn't have recommended the 555Rs, however. Your best bet though is to stop trying to find a tire that works well for both the street and strip. I had a set of 555Rs on my car for a while and they were not worth the money. The BFG drag radials I had previously did a much better job at launching than the 555Rs. The 555Rs were barely better than your average street radial. Problem with the BFGs is that they only get about 5k miles or so before they are too worn to use.

Just get a spare set of wheels and a set of slicks for the track. You'll save money in the long run because of how fast the 555Rs are going to wear out.

Re: tires

wish you would have chimed in beforehand..lol

well i will see how it goes with the 555Rs. i do plan to get a spare set later on, so i'm sure that's what will happen eventually. just wanted something i could enjoy in both places. my fox doesn't see many miles.
