1989 Mustang Exhaust advice

Ive got an H pipe on my 89 coupe, with mac shorty headers, and cats have been cut out with flowmasters that are dumped at my axle, and I don't know what s. My 5.0 is carbourated and it's an early 80s, it seems like it sounds different from the 87-93 5.0. I like the 5.0, but I also like the sound of the 4.6, it has a distinct sound. I was wondering what exhaust setup I could get to make it sound better than it does right now. I might just get pipes welded on to go out the back to make it a little louder and sound a bit different.

Do an offraod H pipe with Flowmaster 44's. Love the way they sound on Carbed 5.0's. Had the exact same setup on both of my old cars, both carbed!

Re: 1989 Mustang Exhaust advice

I just did a custom one. Usually cheaper that way. Just had my exhaust guy fab it up out of 2 1/2" pipe. I don't think it really matters what brand, as long as it's a quality piece.

Re: 1989 Mustang Exhaust advice

If you're talking about the '89 Notch, I would just do LX style 2 /12" stainless tips. That's also what came stock on the '93 Cobra. I had them on my '85 as well, but I dumped the ones on my '84.

That's about right for stainless I'd say.

I personally love my Mac ProChamber. I think it gives a slightly distinct sound from your normal H pipe.

Here's a link:

i dont advise anyone to get turn downs...louder in the car...and the exhaust has a habit of rolln into the car. also makes stop lights dusty if your on a dirty street. great for race cars..not a good idea for street cars...however, some ppl love turn downs on their street cars..most ppl dont though.

I didn't mind mine on my '84 that much. i liked the sound of it a lot. Probably would do them again if I got another GT to play with. I don't mind a little exhaust smell.

i suppose so... my car runs pretty rich at idle... i couldnt handle it. i guesse it would be ok on a stock motor. years ago i test drove a 95 gt with side exit exhaust like meteora chiks car, and sitn at a stop light with the windows down made my eyes water...you guys have at it.

Re: 1989 Mustang Exhaust advice

I had dumps for a while and it was just too much. Way too loud. It was fun driving around in parking decks though.

The main thing I didn't like about them was the lack of the nice stainless pipes sticking out the back. On a GT, it's not a big deal. To me, the LXs just don't look right without them though.

Yea, I bet it was. Lol. I want pipes, but I need to get my rear main seal fixed first.

Well, it's loud, but clear, not raspy, or any back pressure. I want the back pressure, the popping sound. Maybe a O/R X or H pipe with some flowmasters or spintech, 2.5 inch piping with 2.5 polished stainless tips?

That is the best sounding exhaust I have ever heard. I was just talking about that system earlier. Bbunt is that the system with a bid box tying both sides together instead of a pipe. If so that's the one baby. Awesome

Thanks. Yeah it's just a little box at the crossover. I tell everyone it's a catalytic converter...
