possible heads problem?

Ok I'm going to be as specific as possible here. Just bought the car, guy told me he had the engine rebuilt. Well I was putting some oil in it, then started it up and it started making a really loud knocking sound from the passenger side valve cover. Now this is a really loud knock, sounded like someone was punching from the inside of the valve cover. I pulled off the valve cover and it did seem like a few of the rocker arms were loose. They were tight on the fulcrum nut, but still moved around quite a bit. I'm taking the heads off this weekend, but just wanted to know the heads are the problem like I'm thinking or if its something else. By the way its an 82, so if you guys could help me out I will really appreciate it

Re: possible heads problem?

It could be a aftermarket rocker just hitting the valve cover. But regardless u gotta take it apart anyway so put better parts back into it. Upgrade the valve springs and if u got stock cam u could throw some 1.7 rr on it and wake that pony up

Re: possible heads problem?

aounds like a rocker hitting the inside of valve cover or a bad piston or valve.

Not sure what lifters were in the car when it was rebuilt but could also be that one of the lifters could have collapsed if they are hydraulic and also could be incorrect pushrod length if the heads and block were decked when rebuilt. Just a few suggestions. When I did my build I used a pushrod length checker I got from summit racing and then ordered a set of FRPP rods based off the length checker.

Ok here's the update, seems one of the pushrods failed, the little ball at the end that touches the lifter is gone... now its time to find where it went...
