Mallory unilite help 302

I have installed a Mallory unilite dist in my 87 carbed 5.0 and it keeps backfiring out of Carb no matter wat timing

Are you confident the timing is not 180 degrees off? If not, turn the dist 180 and try again.

i agree, you may only be off a tooth or two.

I have turned and it gets better but wen u hit gas it backfires and dies and I've put at tdc and 10 degrees btc

Are you sure you're at TDC on the intake stroke and not the exhaust stroke?

Yes took off plug and rotated til finger blew off

im telling u dude, you need to take it out and put it back in... it's not in right, it's off a few teeth.

Will try that but any other ideas and no ballast resistor either do I need one? And I have red to + coil and switched 12v and black to negative coil and brown to geou

I need any and all suggestions I've timed it to 10 degrees btc and at tdc and I've turned dist both ways and I will eventually run out of gas because it will back fire and stall wen I try to take off and doesn't have full power that it sshould I need an hei and I'm in Cincinnati Ohio any help?

im in cbus... but i dont have any dizzys that old. all i have is efi stuff. anyway, im tell'n you dude, that dizzy is in wrong. you cant turn it enough backward or forward to compensate for it being off a few teeth.

if you have to. take it out, advance it one tooth, then start it. keep doin it till it runs right. that's all i can tell u. ive had to do it before (several times).

try this. get engine to number one cylinder up on compression stroke. drop in dizzy and be sure the rotor button is pointing straight back towards center of firewall/motor. if the rotor isnt facing straight back "12 o'clock (straight up)facing motor" then you aren't on number one

Ok I will try that and I put rotor torwards #1 plug on dist and its right firing order so with that at 12oclock where do u suggest I put rotor cap at

it's not a chevy..... putting rotor towrds number 1 plug is gonna have your timing all fukd up. there should be number one spot on cap... make sure it's "intialy" pointing to rear of motor.

when the 'ol finger blows out , check and see if the timing marks are close : as in tdc ,,, if not rotate it back by hand till they line up ,pointer on timing case and mark on balancer, then drop dist back in ... only use the finger to get it close ( and not to be a smart *** but ,your using #1 cyl as pass side front plug , wright ? )

Yea pass side and lined up with tdc my piston at top and I did face rotor button at 11 o'clock at number one plug

hmmmmmmm, could be the unilite ??? i had a lot of probs with them in the past , so many that i always use MSD any more

Had msd and they go bad it could be Mallory I guess have u ever had that problem due to bad module

if i remember i think i kept burning out the module on my unilite ( long time ago )
but a friend of mine had a similiar prob to yours ,backfiring and it was the unilite
