91 GT shifting into 3rd at parking lot speeds (~15-20 MPH)

My 91 GT is currently shifting into 3rd way too quickly. If I am driving inside of my apartment complex it will shift into 3rd when I'm going roughly 15 MPH. My 91 LX 5.0 isn't doing this and only gets up to 2nd (unless I'm going fast enough for typical 3rd gear). The GT has 4.10s in it, so I dunno if it's the "need" of a Hi Rev Governor that is the issue...maybe TV adjustment? I've been driving it like this for a few months and I've had enough (...I know right), so I don't think the TV pressure is set too low or low enough to not have functional pressure. If I am incorrect about lower pressure causing early shifts, then possibly too high? Though, from what I've read setting the TV pressure high(er) causes later shifts as the transmission is thinking it's at WOT and the Governor has a harder time overcoming the TV Pressure.

Did you replace the speedo gear to make the speedometer right?

I know on newer models (not positive on yours) that the transmission shifts according to your speed. If you didn't get your car programmed to run with those gears your car might think it's goin a lot faster than it really is. Therefore it will try and shift early because it thinks your going faster.

That has nothing to do with this....shifts aren't controlled nor effected by the speedo gear.

...I have a 91 GT dude. You don't get it "programmed". The transmission isn't computer controlled.

Note the part where I said I'm not sure on the older models! If your going to call me out read my entire post. Otherwise stay out of it.

your uncertainty is in the first sentence...I don't have to read the whole post. Stay out of what? This is my thread...I'm helping with your uncertainty. No need to be upset.

So what controls the shift points in your tranny. Something internal or external has to let it know it needs to shift.

Re: 91 GT shifting into 3rd at parking lot speeds (~15-20 MPH)

Shifts are controlled by leveling out the pressure balances of TV pressure against governor pressure. The governor is inside the tails aft housing and spins on the output shaft thus creating centrifugal force to create it's own fluid pressure to push down a shift valve. The TV pressure happens inside the transmission and puts pressure against the valve to keepthe governor pressure from moving the shift valves too easy. Once the governor spins fast enough to create the require pressure it eventually overcomes the tv pressure and pushes the shift valve inward causing a shift to happen. That's how the AOD works and I assume most other non computer controlled transmissions work the same way.

yea for AOD you can install a shift kit but the cpu doesnt connect to it the AOD-E does (electronic)

I remember now lol. What about that little valve on the tranny that runs to the throttle body. Could that cause your problem if that valve went bad or if the hose is no good. Because it would no longer get vacuum?

You're talking about the TV Cable. It is set correctly. Checked it by the book many times. My thoughts would be a stuck governor or it needs a high rev governor valve since it has 4.10s

Deeper gears (i.e 4.10s) cause the output shaft to spin faster than normal thus causing governor pressure to build up fast and overcome tv pressures quicker causing an early shift. As long as my foot is on the gas enough, it will shift normal. It's only happening when I drive super slow, like in a parking lot.

Will do. I have a spare Hi Rev Governor kit that I will put in sometime in the near future. Hopefully that will cure my disease.

You need to get one of those third pedal things, you know, I think they are called a clutch?

You need to calm it down man. You have been snappy more then once in this thread. Just because he was making a friendly jab doesn't mean you have to get upset about it. Your on the internet and sometimes even if people can't help you in your particular problem. They will try and lighten the mood which you apparently missed.

Now on the original topic. If you think the hi-rev governor will fix the problem. Then I suggest you give it a try instead of waiting a while. Then go from there on trouble shooting the issue.

Re: 91 GT shifting into 3rd at parking lot speeds (~15-20 MPH)

I got nothing against auto's... Damn, it was easy to get you going... It was a friendly remark from someone who hasn't worked on a Ford automatic since 1975 when I rebuilt a C4 in my 67 Falcon that I dropped a 351C in....

I can certainly understand running automatics if manuals wouldn't last for you.... I've pulled auto's to put in manuals for the same reason...

autos are good for some people and they are not good for other people a stick is good if you like to race and an auto is good if you like to cruise. Me I like to cruise so I have an auto ,but I also have the power to have a little fun now and then. and that is my two cents.

^^This is a wise man. If it shifts fine while out cruising around then do what he suggests until you have time to swap out the governor.
