94 mustang gt tach problem?

My girlfriends 94 mustangs tach is acting weird. We pulled the instrument cluster everything has good connection there. But for some reason the tach doesn't work 90% of the time, and then sometimes it does. What could be the problem? How do I fix this, if it's working at all then it's gotta be a bad connection I would think but I don't know where the wires go or anything

Buy a Haynes or Chilton's manual with the wiring diagrams and trace out the wiring.
If it is intermittant like that either you have a bad connection or the tach itself is failing.

Re: 94 mustang gt tach problem?

Guys, is it just the tach or are other accessories acting up?

I ask because it could be symptoms of a bad ignition switch contact.

Ok, probably in the tach or wiring then.

My temp gausge will incress as my electrical load increases. When i used to have subs and they would hitg my temp gauge would incress. But i have taken a temp gun to the engine many times and is always at where it should be around 190 200, a few other of my gauges will flutter (battergauge once in a while and oil gauge rarerly but will flutter a little)

You think it could be bad ign contact? Or something else?

Yes, that would be possible.

Did you have a noise filter installed on power wire to the stereo system?

If not, that may have been the cause of the flutter or it could have just been from the sound wave presssure from the subs.

The voltage gauge flutter would lead me to suspect an intermittant contact that may or may not be the ignition switch.

I would also check your grounds, specifically at the engine and ECU.

On the way to work tonight I got to looking at my dash and noticed my needle is actually past zero. It's on the opposite side of the little stopper by the zero.

You could try removing the tach and cover, then gently lift the needle back to the correct side of the stop. Then see if it will work or not.

It is very likely that the tach is defunct though.
I wonder how it got there?
I wonder if it went completely around or bounced past the stop during engine shut down?

Well it was messed up to begin with but I think it jumped it. Is it very hard to change it out and where would I get a new one besides a junk yard?

Is that an in dash one? I already have a tach on my steering column but I'd like to get the factory one to work as well

I've never changed one, but I don't think it would be to difficult.
Disconnect the battery, pull the cluster out of the dash, then remove the tach?

Here is a tach pinout that will help you test it.

I think the cluster is all one piece. I pulled mine out a while back to clean out the Inside and I think it's all one piece. Don't quote me on that because it was a while back. The cluster came out easy tho.
