302 Cam sizes

My dad sold the 289 out of his 93 and got a 78 302 truck motor. It was rebuilt before it was pulled out of the 86 mustang it was in. He doesn't want to put the stock cam back in it...he doesn't want something too big. He wants a mild cam...any ideas?

If it's a 78 truck engine, you're going to need to decide between going flat tappet or spending the $$$$ to go roller....just FYI

Re: 302 Cam sizes

If you go with an alphabet cam, get an E. Better power across the range than a B, still a good cam sound, and not quite as choppy (I.E. unstable idle) as the F, X, or Z.

I'd advise a Trick Flow Stage 1, better cam IMHO

+1
Since he is replacing the cam I would definitely go roller.
More efficient, more power & less friction & wear.

I realize... His 289 had a roller cam in it...when it was supposed to be a flat tappet cam..and tge motor ticked like crazy. But we weren't the ones that put the cam in.

Yeah. Might need to get the work done on my motor and get a roller cam. I've got a flat tappet cam.

Re: 302 Cam sizes

If you don't want to big ,go with something in the .480 to .500 lift range ,and .220 to .224 duration at .050 with a 112 centerline and for a small block Ford you always want to go with a cam that leans more towards the exhaust side , as in split pattern ,like .490 intake lift with a .500 exhaust lift .. they always run better that way

That kit is for a 429/460, not a 302.

I like the mellow lope that the e cam has but it's still enough to turn heads at the red light

X cam serves no real, good purpose other than making an annoyingly loud idle

I respectfully disagree with you on that statement.
I run the X303 in my 306 and it helped make 405 HP at the crank.
And............................I LOVE THE IDLE!
It draws crowds whenever I take it out.

The guy I got this car from says it has 450hp I'd like to take it to a shop and dyno it. I know it's gotta be close. I was running high 8s low 9s missing third gear on the 8th and burning through first and half of second lol i need a new short throw shifter and I should be good. I also didn't heat my tires up at all. Those times was just me pulling up to the start and going lol I bet I could shave a second of easy with heatin my tires up and hittin 3rd

High 8's to low 9's in the eighth mile equal 13.50 to 14.50 in the quarter.
If it had that much horsepower it should be quicker.
Mine ran 12.50's its last time at the track.
The guy who owned mine previously claimed 500 HP.
I called Keith Craft Racing where my engine was built and they looked up the build and told me it dynoed at 405 HP at the crank.

Just takes practice to get a rhythm.

I love horsepower estimates from people selling ..... It is like no a/c..... 50 hp
No smog pump ..... 50hp.
eBay cold air intake..... 50 hp
Light dremel on exhaust valve ports while installing shorty headers..... 150 hp
Vacuum line eliminations .... 25 hp

And an eBay turbo kit add 900 to the wheels.......

Lmao

I heard a x cam before, my last car had a e cam. I don't like big extreme cams unless the car is wicked fast. Making a 13 second car sound like a 10 second car is not my thing, it really just fuels the fire when somebody beats what they think is a 500 hp mustang, when it is really a 300. Just my 02, and so I'm clear. I do like aftermarket cams but BACK them up
