Header wrap or a heat shield on the starter may help, but it also may not if the starter windings are already damaged.
Do you already have the smaller mini-starter on it?
They started installing them on 5.0 Mustangs after 1991 if I remember correctly.
How is your tune?
A lean tune will burn hotter causing higher exhaust temperatures.
