h-pipe or x with cats

I know this debate has been going on forever but I have the choice of getting either an x or h with high flows. The guy says that they are bbk with only about a hundred miles on em for $100 a piece. What will sound better with my flowmaster cat back?

Re: h-pipe or x with cats

Slight confussion on what you said. $100. a piece? the X or H pipe is one piece, mufflers or piping could be two pieces. I have X pipe on both my cars, they say or rather I've heard that X pipe gives a little more power, but the H pipes gives deeper sound, I like the X and have had no problem with it at all, in neither car.

Sorry for the confusion. He has both an h and an x. I can have either one for 100.

OK, I understand now, What I described above about it is still accurate, so it's up to you which one, just remember you can't go wrong with either, they are both good. Just ask around on who has what and see if you like the sound, the exhaust will make a difference on sound so it will be hard to tell. BUT, you can't go wrong with either one.

I think the main difference between the two is sound. According to most people, the X pipe has more of a raspy sound while the H pipe gives a deeper sound. It really comes down to your preference, but you can't go wrong with either one.

H-pipe is more of a deeper sound, better choice in my book

Re: h-pipe or x with cats

The H-Pipes provide a bit of power in the lower RPM ranges and the X-Pipes provide it in the upper RPM ranges.
That and the sound differences previously mentioned are the main differences between the two.

Only issue I see with it is the hangers are broke off. Do I really need em or can I just get some universal ones?

It would be nice to have the originals, but the universals would work too.

Well I put on the high flow x and realized the previous owner welded a set of flowmaster mufflers into the stock size tail pipes. Now I have to find a 2.5 inch cat back system. I thought I was done with exhaust.

If you have a cut off tool you can carefully cut right behind the welds on the muffler pipes and remove them, thus saving the tailpipes.

I agree with Trojan Horse, there are things you can do, that can save you uneccesary money to spend. Definately consider it.

Do I want to save the stock size tail pipes or can I get some 2.5 inch ones? There are reducers welded onto both sides of the mufflers and then welded onto stock size pipes.

Personally I would go with the Larger tail pipe, I think they look the best.

In that case replace them with the 2.5" tailpipes.

I'm currently looking for a good used cat back system. I'm thinking that my x pipe might be gutted cats cuz I looked down one of tubes and didn't see anything near the top of the inside of the cat. I can't see completely into the cat though because of the "x". Plus my exhaust smells a bit now. I really don't want to change out my mid pipe again for emissions so I'm hoping it passes smog testing. I don't really see how it could of been gutted though cuz the pipe still has its factory welds.

Gutted was the old way of doing the trick, so in Delaware, you'll still have emissions testing? WOW. You know they do have those high flow cats. Anyway let me know. Here in FL. we don't have that, at least not right now, but anything can change at any time.

I can't get classic tags until 25 years old and mine is a 91. So I'm stuck with emission testing. The x pipe I have is a magnaflow according to the part number on it. So, I'm assuming they are high flow cats. Part number 93332 I think. It's the old style pipe with 2 cats before they had to start putting the 4 cats on it.

If it's a "Magnaflow" X-Pipe, then it probably is Highflow cats, well thats better than nothing, and at least Legal. Close friend of mine has a 95 5.0 GT.
