95 cobra tach

1-How would I go about testing the tach to see if it's bad? 2-How would I go about changing it out if it is? It usually stays at 0 but sometimes will work just fine or will work but be way off. I have the gauge cluster out but not sure if there is a test I can do?

There are no tests that you can do at home that will verify if the tach is good or bad. It would have to be sent to a repair shop and the cost for testing and repair usually exceeds the cost of a new tach.
It sounds like you have an intermittant connection somewheres.
Check your wiring and connectors.

Yes, out of the 94-95 models they are.
Not sure about the 96-98 as the modular engine may use a different triggering system.

Did your wires and connections check out ok?

Alright here's the deal. Took jwhayne's cluster out of his cobra and plugged it up and it worked just fine. Soooo, what cars are compatible to swap tachs with? I know it has to be a v8 but does it have to be a mustang? It will be much easier to find one at a pull and pay place if it's not out of a mustang.

It will have to be a V8 Mustang, 94-95.
The gauges and cluster are "custom" to each car and I doubt any other V8 car will have the same tach.

I know I'm asking alot of questions but I'm trying to get this figured out. If I buy another cluster will I be able to take just the tach off and put it on my cluster? The speedo and tach are built together along with the odometer. I'm not wanting to lie about mileage or increase my mileage by changing out the speedo and tach.

Without seeing or knowing how it is put together, I'm not sure if you can or cannot. If the tach can be separated from the speedo, then yes you should be able to do that.

I've taken it apart and it can be changed out. The problem is finding one.
