Injectors not pulsing?

Been a long few days. After fixing the starter problem (bad starter), then no fuel pump (relay had bad ground), now the injectors are not putting the fuel into the engine. Engine runs if you keep spraying carb cleaner in the intake (yay). So, I put a ground strap from engine to body (was told it mattered) even though I obviously had the negative cable from the engine to battery, and a cable from battery to body. Tried changing out the TFI, and double checked my timing (the distributor was 180 out, oops) Still nothing. I'm thinking possibly the ECM relay or the ECM itself. And to top everything off, my damn water pump is bad also

Any ideas of what to check or thoughts of what could be wrong would be greatly appreciated.

Did you check the fuel filter? Maybe it being clogged caused the pump failure.just a thought.the pump is definitely running?bad regulator?idk

Filter ok. Pump problem was a bad ground wire at the relay. I'm getting fuel to the rail just no pulse by the injectors. I'm pretty sure its an electrical problem just wanted to see if anyone had some other ideas before I start tracing and probing. Thanx for the input though.

Re: Injectors not pulsing?

ODD the injectors aren't firing ???
and YES You NEED a body to engine block ground , its probably the most important ground of all of them ... I'm thinking ECM

Re: Injectors not pulsing?

Good to know about the ground. I assumed the negative cable from block to battery, then battery to body would suffice. Thanx for the info. I'm gonna hook up scanner tomorrow to see if it can talk to computer, should give me a good indication of whether the ecm is good or not. (after checking power and ground to it)

Man, When it rains it pours doesn't it.
I feel your pain having been there many times in the past myself.

Check and verify that the ground to your ECU is good.
Remove it and check the surface for rust or corrosion, clean if needed.
A bad ground there can cause a multitude of problems.

Always pouring in my neck of the woods it seems : The ground is the first place i'm checking since i know the problem with my fuel pump was a bad ground. Thanx for info.

Re: Injectors not pulsing?

Good news, bad news. Good news is I have power to the computer, all the grounds are good at the computer and engine and body. Bad news is, I'm pretty sure the ECM is bad Does anyone know if a ford garage can test the computer when its not in the car?

Also, does anyone have a list of ECM number for auto's / manuals for 86? I've got a VJ1 computer, was told it was a manual, but have found 1 place that said it was an auto?

I read it's for an auto, though it doesn't really affect anything. If your ECM is bad now would be a good time to upgrade to mass air.

Re: Injectors not pulsing?

Was thinking the same thing And i have found 2 more places that state its def for an auto. But I'm a little hesitant because its not a running engine to begin with hmmm...

I don't know how they test them or if they do. If you pull it out and open the case you can check the pathways and capacitors to see if they are burnt up. Thats generally a good indication of a bad ECM.

All I can find for the 86 ECU is:
86 Mustangs had the DA1, VM1, VP1.....

Here's a list that will provide you with options for the MAF conversion if you decide to do that.

ECU/ECM/PCM (Computer) - List for the 88-93 5.0 Mustang
ECU Year Engine MAF Transmission
X3Z 93 5.0 Cobra MAF Manual (Factory Calibrated for 24# Injectors)
Note: If you use the X3Z Cobra Computer, the MAF has to be calbrated for 24# lb injectors for "THAT" computer not any other.
A9L 89-93 5.0 Mustang MAF Manual
A3M 89-93 5.0 Mustang MAF Manual
A3M1 89-93 5.0 Mustang MAF Manual
S0Z 89-93 5.0 Mustang MAF Manual
D3D1 89-93 5.0 Mustang MAF Manual
A9M 89-93 5.0 Mustang MAF Auto
A9P 89-93 5.0 Mustang MAF Auto
C3W 89-93 5.0 Mustang MAF Auto
C3W1 89-93 5.0 Mustang MAF Auto
A9T 89-93 5.0 Mustang MAF Auto
A9S 88-93 5.0 CA Mustang MAF Manual
8LD 88-93 5.0 CA Mustang MAF Manual
8LF 88-93 5.0 CA Mustang MAF Auto

Sorry, the columns would not stay organized properly.

Thanx for the info. I decided to just order a new stock replacement. Don't wanna go changing wires and wonder if there is a problem with them if the car has troubles after its running. So we'll get it right then do the conversion.

When you get ready to do the conversion, here is some info that will help.

Thanx Trojan. Between this and the 2 write ups I have bookmarked, I shouldn't have a problem.

89 mustang gt fuel problems

I have a 89 mustang gt in the middle of the engine change. the problem i am having is that i replace the fuel pump relay under the seat and the only way the pump will cut on is the by pass the relay. even when bypassing the relay the fuel goes in the lines but nothing works with the injectors. i know i have more than one problem and at the point i am looking for help on what to try or look for so i can finish this project up. not sure where grounds are located at.
