Firing order?

I'm sure it's been on here before but I can't find it so can anyone tell me what are the standard firing orders for 302's and 351's...and what are the determining factors in why some year models are different?

For some reason clockwise from the nipple on top of the cap I've got
7 3 1 8 4 5 6 2.....why in the hell would someone that's owned a mustang for at least 10 years and completely rebuilt several of them put the wires in that order?!?

That's the firing order backwards, should be right on the cap.

Ok so does the nipple on the cap mean anything? Shouldn't the number one go right after that nipple or no?

What kind of cap is it, it would be easier to say yes or no with a visual aid.

Ok.. In the pic you can see the # 1 on the cap but the wire with my finger on it is the #1 wire.....I tried rotating all the wires one post over so the number 1 wire was in the 1 position on the cap and it wouldn't start, So what's up with that?

Someone probably re-stabbed the distributor off a little. #1 changed on mine after my hci when I re-stabbed mine. If it really bothers you you can take the distributor out and roll it to make it match.

It's not that it bothers me, it's just that I'm trying to figure out what's going on with my rich condition and it just running like sh** in general! Hoping that it could be the wiring and have never seen it off like that!

Thanks for your help slowstang!

It's no problem at all, trying to rundown in my head how I solved my problem running too rich.

Have changed the plugs recently? An injector may be sticking as well.

Yeah I'm thinking it's an injector also...I think i have a blown head gasket too so I guess I'll start tearing it down, just not looking forward to it. What other than timing would make it stumble bad when under acceleration....first gear is alright but in second and up if you just give it a little gas it's fine but any more than 1/4 throttle and it bogs so bad it almost dies

A bad tps, running too rich or lean, a plug wire grounding out. Probably a couple more things I'm forgetting.

The determining factor is in how trhe camshaft is ground.
The 302/5.0 HO uses a camshaft ground with the 351W firing order.
This produces a bit more power and less stress on the engine block.
Standard 302/5.0 engines use a camshaft ground with the same firing order as the FE & 429-460 engines.

Here is a diagram that will help you visualize it better.
