Re: The 81 will be getting a new soul...

Floats and pump cams and pump nozzles and jets and idle screws, jeeze it's a pain in the ***. If you want to change the jets, you've got to pull the fuel bowls off and gas just runs out all over the intake. The floats can stick and it'll run so rich it fouls the plugs in no time. They run like hell when they're cold. No thanks. I'd much rather tune with a laptop and a wideband.

If it's a track day only car, then they're okay. If it's got to pull street duty, though, there is no comparison. There's a reason that no cars after 1986 have carburetors.

Actually I love the way a Wilson manifold looks with twin injectors and a big honking turbo looks way better than any carb on ANY motor, ANY day of the week. :yup:

What looks good to you, and to the next guy is purely subjective and everyone is entitled to their opinion. Thanks for playing though

Don't go with a carb. You'll be kicking yourself later if you do.

Don't go with a LSx. I'll be kicking you later if you do.

Seriously though, if carbs were so great, new cars would have them. They don't. They are a ***** to keep tuned optimally for different weather conditions. With an EFI, you tune it once and go.

As far as the LSx, they are great motors for a GM vehicle. For a Ford, they are a waste of money. You will spend way more money on specialized parts for the swap than it is worth. Besides, a stroked Windsor can make as much power for nearly the same price. The only that motor that has a bigger aftermarket than a Windsor is a Chevy 350.

So... throw a EFI 408 in there and later realize that it's too much. That's what I would do.

sit down and plan the build dont make changes the entire way... define your budget (be realistic...) and decide what you can and can not do and go for it... dont constantly change your mine and decide to go different ways or you will never get done and when you finally are you will have something that has a **** done to much money invested in it and that you are not happy with.

Yes. Do you really want to tune it every weekend?

I think not.

This is just silly. Next your going to tell him if he runs a solid roller, he needs to lash valves every weekend

Yes. I am.

Going with a carburated car these days is just silly, unless it is an all out drag car AND.... AND... AND... you actually know how to tune one. I would dare venture a guess (simply based on the contents of this thread) that he does not.

Am I exaggerating on the every weekend thing? Sure. It's the internet, I can do that.

PS - Run a hydraulic roller cam, because if you run a solid roller you'll need to adjust your valvetrain every weekend too.

PST - Thanks for playing though. :cloud:

Re: The 81 will be getting a new soul...

carb motors are for people that need to go cheap, only for a drag car (also cheaper), and those that do not have the ability or money to create and run a FI setup~

Re: The 81 will be getting a new soul...

I have a carb on my dirt bike. Its good for weight savings as it doesn't require a battery, but yes on a car I would defenantly go EFI over a carb. If someone prefers carbs and knows how to get them to work good then thats cool to.

That's what I suggested as well. Do the 400+ motor and be done. Even suggested going big block 460 and being done with it.

But, yeah, go big or go home....400+.
