Dream, did you figure out what popped in your rear?
not 100% sure. im going with the pinon bearing. the pinion was hard to spin. when the pop happened a few weeks ago, it just kinda did it, then was fine. i couldnt figure it out at the time. well when i was driving home the other day i heard kind of a ticking/clicking/ whining noise ....or some **** its really hard to pin point noises with the exhaust as loud as it is. but anyways i think just the one bearings shot. but the spider gears are pretty worn and so is the axle splines. but i think i can probably get it back together untl i can budget the good stuff. all i will basicaly need is a bearing, crush sleeve, and pinon nut. oh and some fluid+friction modifier. everything else seems good. my gears are in great shape with a perfect comtact pattern on the gears and both sides of the teeth.

That mustang is siiick....

On a side note I ripped the rear end out today. Now I just need to see if I can score a deal on some good parts. Also half tempted to try and get this stuff going until I can get some better parts. Hmmm... Idk...lol

You could just rebuild what you have for now and save up for the expensive replacement for later.

P.S. For the support bar to the axle tube, one with adjustable rod ends would work better I think, because you could pre-load (put some pressure) the tubes a bit with those.

That would be great if you could get it back together enough to drive it, though not spirited. It's cool that you can do the work. Well, and that it's not your DD. And glad you got your creative juices flowing for some upgrades.

i was just randomly playing with the google image tab. i used. : axle housing reinforments, diff cover reinforcments.

yeah for a detroit locker with moser axles will run about 1k. its attainable but will take some time. im gonna try to get her back on the road again. prolly a china bearing or some crap. imm put new bearings on it and it will prolly be ok for now.

haha. thanx for the support. the only problem is all my driving is done very spiritedly. if it breaks, then so be it. 2 breakages in the same spot will definitly help with the bargaining chip for the wifey to go detroit/moser. muhaha

+1 on that.. If it breaks it was from me beating on it not low grade parts.. Since you do all your own work buy that china stuff lol run it til it breaks and you get the $$.. We have 8 ford 9" housings laying behind my buddies shop. He said I could have one if I clean one up for him to build next yr. I'm getting it this wknd.. Another slow project

Ok, I can do an image search and maybe find them.

We'll keep an eye open. We might find some used parts that are in good shape. The Detroits are extremely durable and hard to tear up, so maybe we can save you some money on them. Watch the ads on RacingJunk.com. They have some bargains on there occasionally.

P.S. Be sure to check your backlash and wear pattern again after you change out the bearings. I know you probably already know that, I mention it JIC you forget, but then you are not as ancient as I, so maybe you wouldn't either.

That's what I'm hoping. To find a good deal on one. The axles themselves are pretty easily attainable.

P.s. a cover like the one I posted maybe durable enough to add support links to. The only negative of going this route is I wouldn't have the bearing support, which stock doesn't either.

Re: what it takes...

Found the first image at - Ruff Stuff Specialties You can buy them for $125.
My only concern is the weight as they are apparently made from 3/8" steel.

It would be even better if they had included the bearing cap support bolts, but if you build one you can add those yourself I suppose.

Yeah I don't think I would use 3/8

All the cap support bolts do is thread a bolt into the cap right?

Yeah, I think 1/4" or 5/16" at the most would be sufficient.

Yes, the bolts have a flat end on them that contacts and supports the bearing caps in the center where the most pressure is when you are launching or accelerating hard.

ok. after much thinking, project fabbed diff cover in affect. by next payday i will have the stuff i need to get her back on the road. so hopefully i can pull this off before then. hopefully in the next couple days i will have some pics. it will be similar to the one i posted but hopefully a little more rugged and cooler.

p.s i have decided on 3/16" steel. it should be a good mix of not to heavy and pretty strong. im hoping my design will also add to the strength.

Buddy just texted me(the one with the rear that snapped like a twig) got his car back together and it's I'm the 12s with 4.10s, full exhaust, upper and lower intake and possibly gt40p heads, not certain if he's still stock cammed or not, runnin on slicks.

His bro says my car should be a 13.80 car, if not I'm doin somethin wrong. I don't care if I drop into the 13s, if I do it'll be bitter sweet but if I'm in the low 14s on street tires ill be content. Them I'm gonna go back with drag radials

I think I will be able to still get to the track this year. But after my recent rear end issues I think I'm not gonna take the slicks. So I definitely won't be hitting 12s this go.
