If you have a few extra hands you can have a friend put there hands over the exhaust..pluging it I know it sounds wierd, but only plug the exhaust for a short couple seconds..this will quiet the exhaust and make an easy to hear "flutter" from the leak!...
Ive watched the exhaust shop do this several times on my cars to check for leaks before final welding..

Yeah thats a good idea!...especially because exhaust leaks can cause performance issues, and if its a manifold gasket that's just a good excuse to do full exhaust..

Re: Detecting Exhaust Leak?

Take a small piece of white rag and fasten it to a wooden dowl or some type of rod.
Start the car and let it idle, move the rag end of the rod around areas you suspect.
If you see it fluttering, then there is your leak.
P.S. You may get some rag movement from the engine cooling fan air flow, but you can tell the difference.
