I would guess that a VIN check might verify if it is or not.

SSP VIN

Theres likely a website registry for Ex-SHP Mustangs, that would be a place for details like 'how to tell'. I Hope it is one though, very cool!

Re: Getting a new to me foxbody!!!!

According to that they were used but the numbers unknown... Under the hood on this one though where the prop rod rest there is a black number stamped on to the bumper/radiator support I guess its called but I'll post a picture of it.. Not sure if that would be of any use or not

Re: Getting a new to me foxbody!!!!

in ohio , they are marked on the title as former police vehicle or ssp. not sure bout there. ssp cars are only awsome if u r tryn to restore them as ssp. but to convert them back to civilian use with swiss cheese dash boards, swiss cheese deck lids and rear quarter panels.... i would describe as a labor of love.. lol. looks like someone already did the hard parts for u

i just got rid of my coupe, but that thing looks awsome!!!

As an owner of an SSP I can tell you a few things that distinguish them. On the radiator core support on drivers side behind headlight should be a metal tag stapled to the support that says "POLICE". Usually there will be 2 tags stapled there one is the standard tag everyone has originally which contains the build codes. Your tag may also be stamped "DSO POLICE". The other thing is to look under the car at the rear seat bolts. SSP's have a reinforcement plate to stop the floorpan flex under acceleration. Other differences includes the trunk release button relocated to driver side kick panel and the seats have a solid plate instead of suspension in the seat back. Hope this helps.

Re: Getting a new to me foxbody!!!!

I can tell you that on the radiator support there is a black number on there that I would guess is a serial number? I'll give it a good look over on Friday when we get it

Probably not a serial number. If anything it may be a fleet number depending on where it was in service.

Neat car. You can learn and find a lot more about your cars history by ssp forums. I am on specialservicemustang.net/forums , i also have the same user name as here.

All SSPs came with 5speeds standard. If the certain department wanted autos, they could order them with an auto. I've seen mostly unmarked ssps with autos.
All of my dads ssps along with mine are manual.

The ones I've seen we're NC and SC cars, only seen 3 in person. Same kid and his dad had all 3.
