Cleaning heads

Ust picked up a set of 351 heads. They need to be cleaned and rebuilt. What would be the best cleaning solution.

Best bet for a complete clean is to disassemble at home and have them dipped at a machine shop. You could spend a lot of time at home cleaning them yourself and never get as clean as a dip. IMO if you are going to do anything with an engine you should start out with the cleanest pieces you can.

You would have to check with your local shop, but I paid $40 about 3 years back. I know I had a bunch of work done at the same time though. You may want to have them go through the heads while they have them and check valve seats and seals. This would ensure that you are getting a good set of heads. If you already are certain they are good then maybe just the cleaning. The dip is nice as opposed to a steam clean because it gets in all the coolant passages and cleans out all that gunk too. It also provides an excellent base for painting.
