1991 GT keeps switching off

Hey guys,

My car has been switching off while I drive for nearly 1 year now.

The car switches off randomly when I drive or even sometimes at idle. I have brought it to many workshops who cudnt find the problem. When it switches off, I simply pull over and start the car again, however this can be very dangerous at times when there is no where to pull over.

So far I have changed the fuel pump, changed the ECM, had all the wiring checked-main harness. All ignition components have been checked. Nobody knows what it cud be : (

If anybody has had this problem before or knows a solution I will appreciate any help I can get.

Re: 1991 GT keeps switching off

Possible causes could be:

1. Ignition switch
2. TFI Module
3. Distributor pickup coil

If it is an intermittant problem and the car always starts right back up, then it will be very difficult to locate.
No one can really "check" for those types of problems, because there isn't anything to find while they are looking.

Thanks for your swift reply Trojan.

I will consult with the workshop and have those things checked.

Like I said, checking them may not find the problem.
Unfortunately you might have to just start replacing parts until you hit on the right ones, which can get to be expensive.

I think u might be right. It will be costly but I have no choice.

Making a list now of parts to order.

Do you think I should replace the complete
Distributor or only order the TFI module?

So far I have

1) MSD - OEM pro-billet distributor M/T
2) TFI module
3) TFI module repair harness
4) ignition switch

Anything I should add/remove from the list.
I believe the distributor fits hooks right into
The factory harness.

Thanks in advance!

That looks good.
I think the MSD distributor is a good choice. While it won't add any power it is more durable and accurate than the factory distributor. If you get the correct one it does plug in and work with your factory harness. Be careful when choosing as the others require a MSD ignition box to work.

Also, the ignition switch is two parts, the mechanical key portion and the lower electrical portion. I would replace both to ensure everything is in good shape.
