Re: Trans fluid

The 70 weight gear oil is correct according to my research.
I would use a synthetic to help the tranny out a bit and to reduce the rotating friction, because they do not use the roller bearings like a WC T5.

Yes it will.
Gear oil is much thicker than the transmission fluid used in the WC and newer transmissions. So shifting may be a bit heavier feeling, especially when cold.

However, do not substitute thinner oils or auto transmission fluid in its place. They will not properly lube the transmission and it will burn up.

Okay but my trans isn't a world class trans it's a Borg warner NWC and currently has synchromesh in it, I was thinking I should put the gear oil in

If it is running synchromesh, it must have been upgraded?

If it was originally designed to use 70W oil and someone changed the oil to the synchromesh fluid, I don't see how it has kept working.

The synchromesh is just to thin and does not have the correct high pressure additives to lubricate a transmission set up for heavy oil.

No it didn't come with synchromesh in it I am not sure what was in it. I know it's a non world class trans number 1352-065 on the Id tag

Like you said that is a 1984 model NWC T5.
I tried to find a PDF of an owners manual for 1984, but I was unsuccessful.
If I were you I would contact a Ford Dealership and ask them to verify the lubrication needed for your transmission. If you guess wrong it could destroy the transmission.

Well, I hope they are correct. My research said gear oil.
I'm just afraid you may have gotten some who were to lazy to look it up and just said ATF because that is what a lot of them do use.
Ask them if they will back that recommendation up with a transmission guarantee?

If it is ATF the Synchromesh is supposed to be one of the best to use.

So you could not tell what was in it originally?

Here's some more info I found. Not sure of the validity, but here it is anyways.

If there is a metal tag on one of the tail housing bolts, look for a number that says "13 52 xxx" the last three digits of the xxx will identify the transmission vintage and gears inside.

If there is no tag, look at the casting number on the main case near the reverse light switch.

If it reads 13-52-065-904 or lower, it is NON-World Class and uses gear oil.

If it reads 13-52-065-908 or higher, it is an 85 or newer T5 and is World Class and uses Dexron-III ATF, or equivalent.

What're the last 3 numbers? Those don't determine which one it is...

Actually they do. 065 is the last three numbers, means it came out of an 84 mustang/Capri 5.0l. It is pre- world class.
