Alternator & Starter FYI

I was having some starting & charging issues for a while now, and finally after it not cranking at all (you'll see why) I decided to do something about it.
Trying to find the beat deal for starter/alternator I searched online and found I didn't like their prices at all. Then I thought, "oh I still have that v6.. Wonder if those will work." Well, after comparing part numbers, I was convinced it would be worth it to try.
(Oh, and I'm talking about the '94 3.8l v6 and '94 5.0l v8)
I was almost certain the alternators weren't the same, they're on different sides of the motor! But, after removing both and comparing, they are exactly the same. Bolted up perfecty.
The starter, same way! Removed both, compared, perfect.
Left the solenoid and everything plugged it, started right up.

So, FYI, the alternator and starter from '94 (most likely through 98 or higher) 3.8l v6 is exactly the same as 94-95 5.0's. I doubt the foxbodys are the same though.

Check out the teeth on the old starter...

Did you check the starter ring on the flywheel?
With starter drive gear damage like that you may have some bad places in the ring.

P.S. If that starter is ok electrically, you can replace the starter drive for probably less money than a new starter. JIC you need it later.

Re: Alternator & Starter FYI

It felt fine around the flywheel.
Maybe a few tiny chips, nothing to worry about.
Hoping for an aluminum one soon..

Unless you are building a road racing car I wouldn't go to the expense of an aluminum flywheel.
Billet steel or cast iron is better suited to a street/strip car.

BUT, it's your car and your money, so have it however you wish and enjoy.
