87 notch back

I just picked up an 87 5.0 mustang and got it for like 1500 bucks. Car is an auto and its an original 5.0 car. It runs great and shifts fine but im doing some research on different swaps. I will be picking up a 97 cobra wrecked but all the drive train works fine. So im considering doing that swap. Ive seen alot of swaps and would like some input or a good direction to go. Is it worth doing a cobra swap from a 97 or just build what is there like a 351 based motor. Any input would be sweet thanks.

My opinion is I'd rather build up the 5.0 you have and convert to manual transmission.

Aren't 5.0 motors cheaper to build up for power than the 4.6's?

Re: 87 notch back

yeah it is cheaper from what i have seen. I would like to build a 393 with a single turbo. The thing i like about this is since its an auto car i can always put an auto in it since i can convert it to a manual and not mess with the computer other than a mass air swap and tuning. I have a 98 cobra that is supercharged that is putting down 472 whp on 12 psi and meth injection on stock engine. Im just getting different ideas from people. i also had a 347 stroker that put down 378 n/a built for spray.

My old bolt on 4 valve run 12.90s with a 4.10 in a 04 with 302@the wheels. Lets just look at advertised numbers, summit and late model restoration both list the trick flow top end kit and rates it at 340 flywheel horse power, about the same at the rear end, correct? Now let's look more into the weight issue, a coupe weighs 3100ish and weighs 450lbs or so(I'm guessing) less than a 04 Mach 1.

Full exhaust, cai, gears, shifter, under drive pulleys, aluminum driveshafts. Etc. Bone stock long block with no power adders. I'm in no way shape or form saying I would drop a 4 valve In a fox body. I'm only stating weight for weight a bolt on 4 valve would run with a top ended 302 street/strip car

Re: 87 notch back

There is also so much more aftermarket parts for the 302/351 base. I mean i think it would be a cool swap but i think i may just stick with what is has a build a motor for it. I may still pick up the cobra for parts as i can build that for my 98.

Nice rides!
The back glass on that Probe is so clean it looks invisible.

I'd keep the notch pushrod engine myself.
Maybe a stroked and poked 351W if anything.

Re: 87 notch back

I have like three probes two are boosted and one is soon to be it in the garage working on it slowly. There pretty quick for a probe my green one in the pic put down 270 whp and 259 torque on 10 psi.

Re: 87 notch back

here is an update on my 87 notch i just got a set of good pony rims. I traded two sets of really ugly rims for some immaculate ones. And today i went and bought a complete conversion from auto to a 5speed for 650 bucks and also bought a used mcleod twin disk clutch and flywheel for 300 the guy is going automatic on his twin turbo setup.
