pinion bearing install

Hey guys I was wandering if any of y'all have replaced a pinion bearing in a 8.8 b4 and what all Is involved. I'm pretty decent at workim on cars but I haven't messed with rearends much except I bought a 91 8.8. Amd swaped my brakes and 5 lug axles to it which wasn't bad at all.

ive done the whole gears.but i would think your gonna have to set the whole thing.your gonna have to remove the whole carrier to get the pionion out.once you do that your gonna need something to get the bearing off the pinion.i used a bearing seperator and puller.then u take the shims off behind the bearing and reuse those.then put everything back in.your still gonna have to check you mesh and back lash as if you were setting up a new rear end.your also gonna want to replace the pinion nut also.
you will also need a mic and dial indicator.if you plan on doing this im sure we can get you a good set of instruction.

if i were you i would do any gear changes that you want at this time so you only have to do it once.also if the pinion bearing needs replaced you may as well buy a bearing kit.i dont believe they are that expensive.

I bought the rearend used of a 91 gt. Somebody had put ford racing 4:10s in it. It seems like they would put a new bearing kit in it but mabye not. But I like the 4:10s pretty good. I went from a 7.5 one wheel spinner with 273 to 8.8 traction lok with 4:10s. So that was night and day difference there. But when I get about 70 mph it starts vibrating up into the shifter real bad. So I got up under my car and there is a little play on the pinion up and down when I push on it. So I guess that would be the bearing ?

I'm not sure on that.the pinion nut may not be torqued properly.if there is play in the bearing you maybe able to see uneven wear in the gears by pulling the cover.check for metal flakes.and if u do pull the cover u will need new fluid.

U may get a torque wrench and check the pinion nut.that just worries me if it would have came loose and/or was never tightened properly in the first play.which may throw off alignment.

i forgot to mention if it is loose you may want to think about getting a new nut.you are ot suppose to reuse it.then after you re tighten it i would still pull the cover and use some meshing compound and make sure that they are still or ever was properly set.all you have to do is rub the compound on and in between the gears and then rotate the rear end.just look at the pattern pushed into the compound.make sure it is nice even pattern, centered across the gear.basically you dont wan one edge or the other meshing only. good luck and hopefully its nothing major
