confused ..

I noticed a slight ticking sound for about 5 seconds after starting my car it isnt coming from the heads and doesnt increase with rpms.. Any ideas? Ive ive heard that a starter will make this noise and I had problems starting it last week.. Also I dont know if it matters but I installed some after market parts including a set of underdrives and it started the day after I did this..

I heard that sound for months before my starter quit. Starter finally quit because the battery was bad and haven't heard the tick since.

It was weird man like it would roll over fine but if you cut it back on it would roll over like normal just not fire. An hour later it woild crank just fine but im glad to hear a similar situation and it being the starter.. I also thought exhaust leak but it would increase with RPMs as well...

I bet! I hate noises I can't identify! I can't think of anything that would tick and not be effected by rpms. I'm pretty sure ur starter is fine though coz it turns over everytime. Whatever it is, likely is causing ur starting problem. I would start looking at ur recent mods. Anytime something goes wrong right after work was done 9 times out of 10 they are related.

If u use a big screwdriver and put your ear on the handle and the blade on the suspicious parts it may help you hear the problem.if the car hasn't been started in a while the hydraulic lifter may have lost some oil.if that's the case they pump back up really fast and is normal.does it do this every time?

I find it easy to take the alternator off the car and use an impact to remove the nut.you may have to use some gloves to hold the pulley while impacting.

It does it when I first crank the car for bout 5 seconds then slowly dies down. It didnt start until I installed the underdtives and it sounds like its coming from the alternator or from the front of the motor.. I will double check tomo tho.. I thought maybe it had something to do with not putting the alternator ud on?? I have heard people having weird issues with that particular mofication..

Re: confused ..

Are you sure you don't have a loose header bolt?

Or, that a plug wire isn't shorting out somewhere and as the car warms up it expands a bit and moves away from the discharge point?
