Anyone know about replacing a water outlet gasket?

I bought a duralast gasket so I fix the leak. Do I need to buy s sealant for the gasket? Or can I just scrap off the old one clean the area and replace?

Remove and clean the outlet housing and engine mating surfaces.
Use a file lightly on the housing gasket surface to ensure it is flat and even.
A small amount of silicone on both sides of the gasket will ensure that it seals up properly.
Do not over tighten the fasteners.

Thank you my friend. I figured I would need a sealant. I'll prolly just use a razor blade to scrape it off. Haha sounded like a rookie question. Just figured it wouldn't hurt to ask
