speedo stopped working

My speedo stopped working and I noticed that the exhaust down pipe melted it. Does anyone think that the speedo gear in the trans is screwed or am I gonna get lucky with this one and just replace the cable? Thanks again guys.

Likely just a cable. Either way the gears are inexpensive and you'll be accessing it to replace the cable anyways.

I meant the gear in the Trans. I would have to tear the Trans apart to replace that one.

All you would have to do is pull one bolt and the gear should come out.its really easy and only takes about 10 mins.

The speedo cable "drive" gear in the transmission is likely ok.
It is pretty hard to tear those up.
I would replace the "driven" gear on the end of the cable though if it looks worn or damaged.
