3.73 gears??? Need help

In my 5.0 manual I was told I have 3.73 gears witch I believe is true. It sound weird but I feel first gear when I'm driving is completely pointless. It seam I hit like 5-mph an have to shift the rpms get up there so high. I find myself starting in second almost allll the time. I don't like I feel like I'm driving a 4 speed. What can I do? Different gears? Different????

I would pull the numbers off the tranny id tag and see what tranny is in there.because 4 cylinder trannys have a shorter 1st gear.and also you can check your gear ratio pretty easily if you want.all you have to does is support the rear end of the car up in the air.mark the tire and the drive shaft.turn the drive shaft until the the tire makes one full revolution while counting the drive shaft revolutions.

Imo I like the hard launching short first gear.but that's just me.if you have the proper trans then your only option is lowering the gear ratio.

Well the cops around here hate loud cars and things like leaving a little rubber on the ground. So I don't like the launch. The 4cly tran bolts on to the 5.0? If I don't have 3.73 gears would your recommend them?

Re: 3.73 gears??? Need help

jack up the rear , mark the driveshaft
then mark the tire , spin the tire 1 revolution and count how many times the drive shaft makes a complete rev , that'll be your gear ratio
1 spin of the tires , 3 3/4 spins of the drive shaft would be about a 3.73 ,if it goes slightly over 4 spins you have 4.10's etc .....

Yes the 4 cyl trans bolts right up.I think all that's needed is a different pilot bearing.a lot of people use them but they are a little weaker.

Well I haven't drove a lot of 5.0s but it seams to have a lot of power in the trans but I'll see if I can pull the numbers soon.

What gears would you recommend I like low cruzing speeds as it is not a daily driver but I don't want it to be topped out at rpms at 80mph. I hope I'm making sense. Like power but I like to Cruz I want a good average gears 3.73 good for that?

3.73 is a very popular gear.you shouldn't have any problem on the highway if that's what you have, besides a 1-2 mpgs.
