It sounds to me like your stuck in an "open loop" which the ecu will go into default when one of the major sensors that control fuel is faulty. I would still check the basics. All these parts are testable. Get your self a Haynes or Chilton and it should have all the testing procedures.
Check your: MAF, O2 sensors, ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor, or AIT (air intake temp) sensor.
