The stock springs are rated up to a .550 lift I wouldn't push. It's best to get a cam that supports your other mods.. Considering you have stock heads either the bcam or ecam would work great

That's a highly debated quote I personally like the b cams with the right exhaust combo

---------- Post added at 12:00 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:58 AM ----------

This is my b cam with pypes violator mufflers and x pipe..

While on YouTube search Hayden7685 that's my old 85 had a b cam with 40 series flows..

Re: Cam help

i believe x cam is the largest alphabet cam you can go on stock heads and 302HO pistons...

a "z cam", which i dont think they make anymore (dont quote me on it) would require fly cutting the pistons.

i would stay with "e" or "f" unless u are building a race car. anything larger will have your powerband pushed way up the rpm ladder and pretty useless for street driving unless you dont value your drivers license.

and you definatley need to swap valve springs for anything over 100k mi.

im not real positive on the 550 lift rating on stock springs though per novi2000 suggestion.

regardless, anything over an "b" cam will quickly wear out stock springs that have 100k mi. or more.

and i highly recomend u swapout the spings when you do the cam... valve floating is a super annoying experience.

hope this info helps a bit.

+1 on the springs.. It's fairly simple to replace them and springs aren't very expensive. Just get in summit or Jegs and get you some comp springs. Also a simple rebuild of the heads is cheap.

I would go with a Anderson or trick flow stage 1 cam. I had a e cam and it has .498 lift. You could get away with stock valve spring but if you got a couple hundred bucks get the upgraded trick flow double beehive springs. With that much lift you stick springs could fatigue and float over time. I am in no why picking on a abc cam just saying they are better ones now days.

Re: Cam help

my friend and i both run "e"cams. but he runs 1.6rr and i run 1.7rr we parked both cars side by side, started them, and listened....

you can hear the xtra duration from the 1.7 versus the 1.6. a longer duration between the lopes (if im making any sense). guesse u had to be there lol

i wish we had recorded it. just thought i would ad that so i could particpate in the thread..lol

I've always heard with a stock 302 it's .512 lift cam with stock rockers, roller rockers you might be able to push a little more. Again just what I've always been told.

Any cam in general, I always hear a .512 lift cam is the biggest you can go with stock heads and rockers.

some people go bigger on the exhaust1.7 and leave the intake 1.6 for forced induction applications to make sure it all gets out of there.
